I want to make some cool patina design so I want some inspiration, plus it would be nice to make a thread with pictures of interesting patina designs, maybe even sharing how you did it.

Not fantabulous, but this is my first and only patina. I stuck the Sodbuster blade in an apple for a few hours. You can see where a seed was bisected.

Here is my old edc Gayle Bradley. I put some tape over the edge and soaked it in vinager. I was only going to leave it in for a little while but I got busy at work and forgot about it. 5hrs later the vinager soaked through the tape and made this messy looking design.

After quite a bit of use the patina did even out and looked pretty nice. The knife resides with a forum friend now.

I stripped this Dogfather, and wrapped it with a paper towel soaked in apple cider vinegar.

How do you do this exactly?

The steel needs to have a low chromium content, and the higher carbon content the better and faster the patina will form. Second, you need something acidic like red wine vinegar that will oxidize with the carbon in the steel, therefore creating a stain. A stainless steel will not form a patina.

Where can I get a knife to do this?

a patina design is a design produced by darkening of the blade (patina is oxidized iron on surface of the knife, it is not rust though),
, patina will naturally develop on a carbon steel blade, but you can force the patina on in an acidic environment, the iron oxide will develop faster on a surface exposed to oxygen than on a covered surface, so by producing uneven surface of the acidic agent ( be it vinegar, mustard, or apple slices) you will produce a design
and a knife to do this is any carbon steel blade knife. you can buy cheap carbon steel knife and try to make a really cool design ( if you do, post here though, so we can see your results)

An RC-4 that I did.

Note - On this knife the coating has to be removed first.

Not the best pics but you can hopefully get the idea.

This was achieved by...

1) applying a liberal amount of mustard on the blade
2) wiping off the majority of mustard with angled sweeping strokes with finger
3) wrapping the blade in an apple vinegar paper towel.
4) leave wrapped 45 minutes, then rinse off...may have to scrub a little

Just to add my own one, It is the only one I have made yet, but I have Opinel modding project ahead of me, and I want some wicked camo patina on that one.
