Let's see some production models that folks have modified in some way or another.

To get things going, here are two of mine.

A Spyderco SS Cricket with cocobolo scales.

It's a fun way to kill some spare time and a good way to occasionally screw up a perfectly good knife!

There are a few more in addition to these on my web page but it needs updating.

A while back we had two very long threads going in the Gallery of production knives people had customized, do a search, there's some nice work represented there.

cpirtle,
What did you use for the scales on that commander? It looks pretty slick. I have been debating customizing a knife here pretty soon, and I'm leaning towards a mini commander.

Plumber576: Not to preempt a reply from cpirtle, but I think I've seen translucent yellow G-11 scales like the ones on the Emerson.

I vaguely recall that a knifemaker made folder scales with this material. I think his first name was David. I know, that really helps huh. :)

From reading specs, I've gathered that G-11 is another Garolite variety with higher tensile and impact strengths than G-10. Probably doesn't mean much in a knife handle though, unless you're hardcore enough to deflect bullets with your handles.

Added:
Oh yeah, since G-11 isn't very popular, it usually doesn't come in any colors except for its natural "greenish" hue. Plus it's pricier than G-10, if for no reason but the dearth of sources.

Here is my small Sebenza with Australian Silky Oak scales.
I don't like pocket clips so I covered up both sides the same.

Danish knifemaker Jens Ansø customized my Camillus CQB-1 for me! :D

Jens is sick! The only thing he could possibly do to surprise me these days is make something I don't absolutely love. I'm so glad to have been able to see his progression from when he first started up with BFC until now. The guy is a maniac and I MUST have another one of his knives!!! :D

Thanks Bo, it was very relaxing to work on and has a much nicer feel in the hand now.

That "Porcupine" is seriously wicked. I'm a fan of Jens' work too.

Hi Plumber,

That's a discontinued Emerson Mach 1 which is similar to the commander in appearance.

I got the material in a trade for some of the Blaze orange G-10 I have. I was told it was natural G-10 and was purchased from an electronics manufaturer who uses it for insulation material. Color wise it is more of a translucent lime green color, structure wise it is identical to other G-10's I've worked with.

Not sure where you would get some and I just used the last of what I had on another project :(

Chiro,
Yeah, Jens certainly has something for wild designs like this! It's a seriously sweet knife though and very different from the original CQB in every way!

cpirtle,
The Al Mar and the Emerson with the G-10 are fantastic!

cmd,
The Cricket just looks like it would feel great in hand! Very nice result!
Thanks! The Porcupine dagger is really something else! Both beautiful and incredible feel and balance!

Some time ago, Jens graciously offered to spice up my one and only folder, a BM Mini TSEK. I got back in '02 and it was the first knife I had bought in years.
It's been my beater since I got it and quite frankly....it looked a little tired!
Well, it came back from Jens today and - as usual - I was blown away!

Didn't have much time, so here are a couple of snapshots:

It's a different knife all together now! The textured scales are fantastic, but Jens also beadblasted the liners, clip and even the screws + polished the thumbstud!

Oh yeah, included in the package was one of Jens' new keyrings and a patch! Both are great!

Thanks Jens, you'r the best!

OK...this thread finally convinced me to have a knifemaker do a few things to my semi-serrated Emerson Mini-CQC-7B I've always wanted to spice up a little...it'll get a satin finished blade, light blue anodized liners and the G-10 scales will be spiced up as well - thanks for giving me food for thought, Bo and Jens!

I'm sure it'll turn out real sexy and wicked!

Hey QS, you'r welcome man! Can't wait to see the result!
I like my CQB-1 and my Mini TSEK around 300% more after the mods! :D
