Show us your outdoor knife/axe block (for practice using those BK's)

I've been after a block to practice knife skills at home for a while, had planned on heading out on the weekend with the chainsaw. I was on the way to an important meeting yesterday, had the bag of fruit on (Aussie slang for suit), and I spot these babies by the side of the road from a housing development clearing.

To good to pass up so out I get out and near give myself a hernia lifting them into the SUV, these things are Aussie hardwood and heavy as anything. (My wife wants me to go back and get more for seating in the yard). Anyway realised before the meeting I was from knee to chest covered in dirt, was rather funny. (a committed Beckerhead)

So I wouldn't mind seeing a few pics of what you guys use.

Question - does anyone do anything to help preserve their blocks? Calling one my Becker block.

Considering heading back for a few more on the weekend.

Nice original thread idea!

Got a lot of pics of things in and on top of the stump, but none of the stump itself, really. These (I have a couple) are sugar maple downed in a microburst (mini tornado) we had a couple years ago. The rest of it is stacked awaitng the flames....

Of course the stuff is hard as a rock - it's what butcher block is made from.

Been using this one for a couple of years. Can't beat a good piece of ash.

Thanks lads,

Moose - yours looks like (obviously) it's had a hell of a lot of use! (and nice blades man)

Granite - Wouldnt mind that second block, I think that will be here looong after you and i are gone, i noticed the timber grains are a lot tighterr in that particular pic, considered pouring some resin in the guts of mine to cease the seperation from weather. (geez i want a Doug Ritter, got the $ just cant track one down)

Tradewater - looking at that pile your an old hand on the axe, and a well looked after axe as well.

Thanks for your contributions boys, i was thinking along the lines of Granite, its a resource/tool we take for granted.. Anyone else?

Wish I had something to add, but we are living in a sub-600 square foot apartment in downtown Toronto and paying over $1000 in rent. And that's a good deal. No room for knife/axe blocks. Man, I'm so jealous...

Gus, if it makes you feel better, market rent on my apartment is 2300+ a month ..... Fortunately I get a good discount, because I work here.

I figured when a Beckerhead had his knife outside, there was no log left un-batoned. I haven't gotten to really use my BK knives yet. Unfortunately I live in an apartment in the city.
Those must have been FUN to load into the SUV!! I hope you used your knees! One thing you can do to protect them is keep the top of them covered when you think there may be rain. Some people actually put plastic caps on large wood fence posts to keep water from sitting on top of the post and seeping into the gaps in the grain which will cause rotting over time.
Looks like a good set though. One to sit on and one to work on.

'Bag of fruit' huh? Never heard that one before. Thanks for the explanation.

That tight maple grain (giggity) will tell you something about the Brute: I tried a dozen times to get it to stick in that stump for a pic, and there is just no way it's gonna happen. The edge is so thick, it won't penetrate enough to stay in. The only way I could get it to stick was hitting the edge of the stump, and even then it doesn't bite like the King or the Machax. That Brute really needs to have the edge thinned out - substantially.

One more - that Fiskars Super Splitter is the bomb....

Definitely sees some regular use:

Mine's usually a piece of Red Oak. I don't do anything to protect them . Looks like I should but they are easy for me to replace.

Have you used your first run production 15? Good setup by the way man.

Thanks. Yes, I use it frequently. It's my favorite. Here is a more recent picture...

I really need to take a better picture of it. I've posted this picture before and it's not really a good one.

Yep, same here. "Market" rent for my place is just over ~$2500 a month (900 sq ft, 2bedroom 1 ba, no AC, no Dishwasher, no washer/drier, no garage). Right now we're getting a "deal" at $1925 a month, but they're kicking my wife and I out in the next few months to renovate and raise the price up to market. So I'm struggling to find anywhere within a 10 mile radius or so of work that is less than $2200 :(. So I totally know this feeling :/.

holy cow!!!!!!

^^ this was my thought when I moved here. This place is literally 4.5x more expensive than the place I was living with my wife when I was at school, and our rent is higher than most of my extended families house payments by a factor of 2 or so :(.

So yeah, I wish I could have a sweet knife block , but I'm just not sure where I'd keep it/use it right now (pretty sure chopping away on a block in the apt completex common area with my BK9 would scare everyone here to death).

I like seeing the pictures of everyone else's though :).
