I posted this in another forum but seeing how there was a neck knife involved in the firestarting maybe some here would enjoy it.

During a car/truck camping outing I decided the fire would be started using traditional flint and steel methods using my neck knife and local quartz. The kids were instructed to look for quartz to be used with the high carbon steel. I gathered some dry grass for the tinder bundle or bird's nest however often mine don't look like anything near what any self respecting bird would lay an egg in. Given the high percentage of Lyme infected ticks in the taller grass the kids were left back at camp for this part.

For an extra kick we added a good amount of pine tar. Once this stuff catches a flame it burns long and hot. It resembles burning plastic right down to the funky smoke.

I had them all gather fire wood, one helped ignite the tinder bundle and the other tossed more tinder and sticks into the blaze. The fire raging later that night.

Here is a video of the process.
