Showing the little one some sharpening/reprofiling

Last week I continued modifying my Condor Bushlore knife (one of the earlier series; 3mm thick and bad edge).
I ordered the knife somewhere end of 2009. When I received it I felt disappointed for the bad finishing (well ok, it's a very cheap knife, but still). As known for the earlier series the edge was way to far from the handle and had some sort of convex edge that didn't even cut soft butter. Tried to use it 2 times and finally placed it in a box with the idea "ok, lets make it a project knife".

So a couple of months ago I already brought the edge up close to the handle. Must say it took some time with only a Dremel tool and diamond benchstones.

Last week I got home from work and finally found a moment to reprofile the edge to a scandi grind. I started with one of my coarse diamond stones but soon my little one started begging for attention. So I picked her up and placed her on my back. She was curiously following every step of the reprofiling process by looking over my shoulder (I was standing and bending over the worktop). So went through my diamond stones until the XF diamond stone and continued with my japanese water stones up to 5000. Had a nice edge by then. Had to stretch my back, took a chair, placed the little curious one on my lap and finally finished with some black and green buffing compound on a leather strop.

I must say wow it performs great now! It's razor sharp. So tried it for shaving nxt morning  and did some wood carving with it. Very satisfied with the result. It’s not perfect yet. Needs a little more work on the tip and also on the handle. It has a minor scratch because of the Dremel tool, but it’s supposed to be a user, not a display knife ;)

Oh and a picture of the little girl (unfortunately not while she was sitting on my back):

Blade looks great. I don't get too worked up anymore when knives show up dull. In a perfect world, they would all show up sharp but it's just another reason for me to practice my sharpening.

Don't forget to tip your little helper. She's a cutie.
