Shows on the same date? Why?

It appears both the Chicago Knife Expo and the Spirit of Steel Texas show will take place on the same weekend in September this year. Furthermore, the respective websites list a number of the same makers attending both shows. As far as I know, its not possible to be in two places at once.

Can anyone tell me what reason the promoters could have to schedule their shows in direct competition, for attendees as well as exhibitors?

I can understand why shows can be scheduled for the same dates, but how do these shows manage to get the same knifemakers? Do makers sign up for shows before they know when they will be happening? This kind of makes sense if shows tend to move their dates around a lot. For example, if one year the Chicago show is not held at the same time as the Spirit of Steel show, and then the next year they are both held at the same time, that could really mess up makers' ability to accurately determine whether they will be able to attend both shows.

In 2005 the ABS Reno show and the Las Vegas show were on the same weekend.
Shows are scheduled far in advance so one would think promoters would communicate with each other to avoid a situation that is detrimental to both.

I think you will find that the Spirit of Steel Show changed their dates twice before they finalized them.
