Looking to add some micarta scales to a small schrade schf55 fixed blade. Anyone been able to source any from the web? Tried to get in touch with LMF Knives but not had any luck there. Any recommendations would be useful - especially regarding quality and reasonable lead times. Some photos would be good too (as always) :)

Many thanks all.

Not likely to find any pre-made. You'll need to go custom.

The scales will cost more than the knife.

I agree. The custom scales will likely cost more than the knife. But if you are hell bent on getting micarta on it, then by all means go for it!

Best of luck

More than likely. Kinda like micarta. Guess I may have to try making my own :)

I know of a maker who does micarta scales for that model at a reasonable price. I don't know if they're a supporting member here though so email me and I'll give you the info. Tlesharpening@gmail.com

No they aren't available from Schrade. I would have had to have the knives made in China for the micarta to be an option. They didn't do micarta in their Taiwan facilities at the time, and I doubt if they do now. Mostly Taiwan is into higher tech solutions and moldings as far as handle scales go. China wasn't an option for me as the Chinese heat treats seem too inconsistent for my liking.

However there are a few options for after market handle scales. Kevin Castle of GKC Outfitters on Face Book makes scales for all of my Schrade models, SCHFs; 9, 42, 42D, and here in the US. and then Ashdown Forest Crafts makes scales and sheaths for my knife design in the UK, and Carry Customs makes scales for them in the UK. There are a few other guys making aftermarket scales and sheaths for them in other parts of Europe, but I haven't been formally introduced to them yet. There are a couple of guys making after market kydex sheaths for them, and a couple of guys making aftermarket leather sheaths for them also. As far as I've seen the plain Jane micarta scales tend to cost about the same as the knives. The Shadetree Electric Plum scales I put on one of my 55s costed a little more obviously.
