Has anyone ever used shrapnel from artillery or mortar rounds in damascus? I have never been able to find out the type of steel. I have some, guess I should spark test it first. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck with it?

Hey, send me some and I"ll try it and share the billet with you. I'll put into a canister with the powder 1084 and weld that sucker up.

I have a billet out in the shop that contains a large fragment of a ChiCom rifle grenade that he literally pulled out of his ass in 1968.

We figured it would be cool to do a service commerative fighter for him.

I'm making a few commemorative knives for soldiers overseas and returned. One is seeing about getting a piece of shrapnel big enough for a guard, I didn't even think about using it in damascus. Sounds cool.

I know this is in poor taste even as I'm typing this, but I have to ask... Did you wash it first? That said, I think this type of project is cool. I would like to see pictures of the finished work!

Hehehe.....he describes it hitting him in the tailbone area and sinking in about an inch. The whole piece is flattened, about the size of you palm, and had all the fragment cuts in it....a bit finer than the pineapple grenade.

He got it shot at him after he smoked an NVA security dude who was protecting a medical unit getting ready to cross a stream. I guess it offended the bad guys when he emptied the rest of his mag at the main part of the unit.

He says that he can never listen to CCR's "Run Thru The Jungle" without thinking about that.

Jeez. Glad I've never had to do anything like that, personally, and that there are people out there who are willing to do the dirty work to preserve our way of life. Sheesh.
