Well I had an interesting experience today. I had cut out some profiles on the saw and was going to finish them out on grinder. I placed a new 40grit ceramic belt on the grinder, I won't say which maker because I have never had a problem. When I turned on the grinder I cranked up the speed and noticed that it was making a perculiar sound so I cut the grinder off and checked everything. Everything looked alright to me so I cut it back on again noting the sound but continued on. I picked up one of the blades and pressed it against the platen. Almost immediately the belt shredded with loud sound and what felt like a bull whip across my left should, chest and back. I was already backing away from the machine and fully expected some serious damage to my chest and back from the pain I was feeling. Luckily all i had was some abrasions from the fresh 40 grit belt and a 1 inch wide whelp running from my upper chest across my shoulder and down my back aways. What really surprised me was the machine still had a 1 inch or so wide piece of belt still intact on it running smoothly.
I've had belts break at the joint but never just shred like this one did.
