Does anyone know anything about this little guy? The profile, finger guard and butt cap are the same as the 192. No model # or date stamp. I have posted pics with a real vanguard for comparison.

Its the vanguard mini, the only place i've ever seen one is at bass pro shops,it might have been a specialty knife made just for bass pro.

Jockey, I like it... What's stamped on the end of the box... Razor, do you know what year it came out...

Those were made as an exclusive for BPS and show up in the 2006 Special Projects list (found in the March 2007 newsletter). There were four versions, the 486 (mini 191 zipper/wood handle), 687 (mini 192 vanguard/wood handle), 688 (mini 691 zipper/rubber handle) and the 689 (mini 692 vanguard/rubber handle).

According to the list they were made in the following numbers:

686--770 made
687--750 made
688--800 made
689--800 made

You can't always depend on the number made in the list to be accurate, sometimes they are projected numbers and not actual numbers produced.

A quick search got me a 2007 post from here http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/505878-Buck-Vanguard-and-mini-vanguard
and a 2010 review page from BPS. http://reviews.basspro.com/2010/820...views/reviews.htm?sort=submissionTime&dir=asc
Listed as a 3/4 version. Appears to have sold for around $75-80. I also saw a mention of a mini-zipper (3/4 also). I'll be looking for one of those, I like having little sets of two. My 191 and 192 with a matching set of minis would be nice to have.

So, I inherited one of these from my late father, the model 689. As far as I can tell, it is new on the box. Being that only 800 were made, does it have any collector value?

Hi, welcome to the Buck forum. Your first post. I assume you joined the forum just to ask your question. Yes, it is collectable. Being new here I'm sure you are not familiar with the rules but it requires a "paid" membership to ask value questions or sell here. Not my rule but we have to abide by it. Having read the above posts you know when your knife was made and how many. I have 3 of the 4, missing the 688, the gut hook version of the one you have. You are fortunate to have the box, that gave you the model number which enabled you to search. The knife is not marked with a model number and when they occasionally show up on ebay they are sold generically and undervalued. It's a cute little knife and if it belonged to your father you should keep it, can't replace that. If you have any questions other than value, I'd be glad to try and help. If you would like someone from this forum to privately contact you about your knife, go to your profile and post your email in your profile somewhere.

Here is a picture of the model 689 from my collection. They are about 1" shorter than the standard knife. 3/8" in the handle and 5/8" in the blade as I recall.

Thanks for the reply! I'm not interesting in selling, I was more wondering if I should use it or keep it as a collectable. I also inherited a "good old 110" from my father, so I have a practical knife I can use and remember him, while keeping the 689 new in the box as both a remembrance and as a collectable.

It would be nice to have a general idea of its value, so I did add my email address to my profile.

Welcome to the Buck forum DrMegabyte. You may try checking completed auctions on the big auction site, if you can find your particular knife to get some idea what it's value is.

I remember when BP carried those. I never had an interest I one until they stopped carrying them. Nice little knives imho.
