I just got 2 pair of scales from Bill Siegle (WAS4U@cs.com and I must say that the work is excellent. I know they're a bit pricey at $55 a pair but each scale is hand made and is very well done and it really enhances the handling of the knife. I have always found the plastic scales too thick for my hands and a bit uncomfortable. Bill's G10 scales (mine are black) really upgrades this knife from an excellent user to an exceptional using knife. His scales fit all the models and he includes SS hardware. Takes about 3 minutes to take off the old scales and put the new ones on. I put them on the Patrol Machete and my combat/utility 7 and will get another pair when I get the 9".

I guess it all depends what you want. If you're like me and like to improve an already good thing, this may be a nice upgrade. Of course, the price of the Becker line can't be beat and the knives do perform very well with the production scales but I am glad I did this. Bill does first rate work, his communication as always is excellent.

This is a picture of the scales Bill posted. I don't have a picture of the scales on the knife....yet.

Greg’s right on the mark about the BK&T replacement scale sets offered by Bill Siegle. I just got a set and installed them on my BK9…it makes all the difference in the world. The Beckers are probably the best value in the production cutlery world right now, but the stock scales just didn’t quite work in my smallish hands. Mr. Siegle’s replacements were exactly the enhancement needed to make the Combat Bowie a near-perfect knife…they’re well worth the cost. Bill was willing to answer all of my questions and was a pleasure to deal with throughout the transaction. I’ll definitely be getting these scales for any BK&T products I purchase in the future…

UglyJim: I think you should read marty123's post about making camillus to use smaller scales.

Excellent idea, thanks for the pic and review- one question, are the G10 scales noticably lighter, heavier, no difference?
Thank you,
Martin

Well, I haven't taken the G-10 scales off of my BK-9 for a direct comparison, but they feel a little lighter than the plastic stock scales (an improvement, IMO). I suspect that both materials are fairly close to the same weight, but the oversized (for me) plastic scales just felt somewhat awkward and klunky, and my brain probably tended to associate those sensory impressions with excessive mass. Certainly the reduced handle profile makes the knife feel quicker and more agile in my hand; but that's probably due more to better grip control than to any changes in weight. Just my impressions, mind you...I probably don't know what I'm talking about :p

I had originally planned to get the replacement scales, but I realized that the kydex sheath that I had made for my C/U 7 is molded around the handles as well, so thinner scales would not work with that sheath. You guys do make it sound pretty enticing though.

Thank UglyJim, that's helpful. The price of the "aftermarket" scales is worth it if it gives better performance for the "end-user", besides the Beckers are such a bargain to begin with, they are still reasonable price overall with the new scales.
Zenghost- Could you reshape the kydex with a hair dryer? (I have never done this, however it is suggested often as solution to tightening/ loosening problems with kydex).
Thank you, Martin

I had thought about it a little--although I'm not sure if the hairdryer would work. I'm just a little wary of ruining the sheath since Clay over at balisongxtreme put a lot of work into it.

Kodiak,

I just bought the C/U 9 and am curious about the scales. When you get them on your knife, can we have a shot from the top of the handle (spine facing up) to see what the profile of the scales on the knife looks like?

Also, are there any contours on the scales? Can't tell from the picture because the black absorbs all of the light.

Thanks!

here is a set I just made prior to sand blasting. I installed them on my 9 and to me they feel great.

and here is a horrible edge view scan to show the thickness.

HOT DAMN!!! Great pics Bill! I'll be ordering a set soon...:D

BTW do you make them in other colors like desert tan or olive drab?

Thanks,

Chris

I only do them in the black G10 but if you want to supply the material I can do them in other colors. I just can't stock enough material to supply different colors. The price for a set of scales is $55.

Bill,
How much for a set with customer-supplied material?
Micarta, ok, too?
Can you feel any difference in the balance with the new scales? Wondered if they were lighter.
I wouldn't mind more of a forward balance on my 7...
