Fresh back from a weekend trip to the Eastern Sierras. On this trip, we camped in Independence, CA near Onion valley.
Elevation: 9,200
Temperatures: High 70…Low 30’s
Clowns: 4
The Eastern Sierras are about 4 hours from where we live in California. The area we were in was still snow covered as were all the trails. In the Sierras you can almost always count on the 4pm hail/rain/sleet storms that last about 3 hours. We have summited Mt Whitney twice together and one of the guys did it a third time (why?)……
The first stop on the way was to Vasquez Rocks. This is the site of many movies and a Star Trek episode were Captain Kirk fights the GORN. Most of the park was closed to more movie filming!!!!!!

I can always count on these guys to defile any place we visit….

Onion Valley

We made camp after trudging through the snow…then hit the trail (kind of)….
I set up a lean-to with my tarp, made some stakes and had to add a wind break from the violent winds!

The H&B Forge Shawnee made a few down and dirty tarp stakes…

I found the round pole did not split the green wood stakes as much as a conventional hammer poll on an axe.

Hitting the trail, but not really….
Every bit of the trails to lakes and cool scenery were covered with deep snow. We were a few weeks too early for this area….

All bushwhacking at about 9,400 feet…

Deep snow…

The prince…Amir

Brian and the BEAR

Avalanche

Three amigos…or fools!

Camp and Tools
The H&B Forge Shawnee Tomahawk did the heavier work…

…while the ESEE Camp-Lore did the finesse stuff!

If I can’t get it done with these tools…I shouldn’t be allowed outside!

Stew

Spruce Tea

Warm apple pie to keep the calories up for the 30F night!
