I hate these this vs that threads but I have to start one. :o

I was just looking at the Sig 556 and the Robinson XCR at the local gun store. I can get either for $1500. Both are piston driven 5.56mm and take regular m16mags. I haven't shot either so I can't know which might be better to shoot. I want reliable. The sig comes with pop up back up sights, the Robison feels lighter. Both come with plenty of rail if one wants to put a crap if one is inclinded to add a light etc.

Anyone shoot one or both?

I have seen and handled both and my major complaint it they both feel front heavier than I care for and I dislike not having dedicated iron sights on any rifle I own. The afterthought type clamp on sights they use are for to0 susceptible to damage for me to consider either for anything other than a range/target rifle.

If you want a lower priced gas piston .223 you might also look at the Golani Sporter (AKA Galil) or an AR 180.

i've shot a buddies sig 556 and i wasn't impressed. the pop up backup sights are poo and the whole dang gun is too heavy for a 5.56. just pick up a {or another}version of the ar-15.

I don't care for the charging handle being on the right side of the 556 or the rear site that takes about 3 minutes to get up. I would like to get a better look at the XCR and the new Bushy ACR (AKA Magpull Masada)

The charging handle on the ACR is on the left, where I prefered it as well.

I forgot about the bushy.

Looked at the AR 180 here, after you mentioned it. I don't want to look for modified magazines. I have a bag of AR mags so want a rifle that takes them.

Interesting about the front heavy deal; seems most ARs are a bit heavy in the front...mostly due to that collapse stock that is so in vogue. (talking normal ARs not your little shorty, ;))

The magazine mod takes about 30 seconds with a Dremel tool, no biggie really. I don't don't care for the collapsible stock, currently a standard stock is back on my shorty. One of the nicest thing about the 180B is the scope mount is permanently on the receiver and makes for a very good QD scope mount with great repeatability.

Of course if you have a spare 3500.00 you could always go with one of my favs, the FN FNC or the HK93.

The Bushmaster ACR is the unsuccessful (due to financial reasons I believe) Magpul Masada. On the Magpul Masada the bolt handle was on the left side of the receiver but on the Bushmaster it is on both sides in the same position as the HK G-3, on top on the forward handguards. It accepts AR magazines. Not sure when it will be available to the public, Bushmaster is talking "early 2009".

Zen,

The XCRs have come a long ways since the begining. Check out XCRforum.com to read up on them more. There were a few tech issues early but they seem to be resolved. If you take a glance at the bolt you'll see RobArms borrowed pretty heavily from the AK system in all the right ways. Huge lugs, powerful extraction throwing brass to the 2:00 position. Solid well built gun. Not to mention multi-caliber. The standard is in 5.56, but with seperate caliber kits (consisting of barrel, bolt, and maybe?? gas tube I think) you can have 6.8SPC, 7.62x39 and I believe 6.5 Grendel and 5.45x39 is on its way.

For the record, I DO NOT own one.....but I am currently doing the same search you are and I believe I have settled.

The ACR/Massada might be nice....I wish it wasn't Bushmaster making it though. I have lost a lot of confidence in them over the last couple of years. Hopefully under knew ownership with the MagPul guys up their collective butts they will stay on top of the quaility control.

I own a Sig 556, and I like it. Bought it without sights, put on aftermarkets, and a 551 handguard, since I've always wanted a true 550 series but don't have the 14k to pay for it.

I like the gun. Basic, dependable action, folding stock, piston driven, decent weight, and plenty accurate.

Thanks for the info; I'll have to look at that forum. I would like the option of changing calibers with a kit; I like that in a firearm...much like Glocks and Sigs and perhaps a few others.

I have a nice Leupold scope that I might put on it. If you had a Leupold scope just sitting around; would you put it on your Sig?

I tried a Leupold on it, but I went with an ACOG instead, and put the Leupold on my DSA FAL, which for me is more of a distance gun.

I like an open eye dot optic for most rifles, unless I really see a need for some distance work.

a friend of mine has an RobArms XCR. I've shot it once and liked it. Shot a DPMS AR-15 Lite 16 the same day. Liked the weight of the Lite 16 better but the felt recoil was less on the XCR. Though shooting either wasn't bad. Both were fun! The XCR has fed all the ammo my friend has used in it and that includes Wolf and black bear.

Can't comment on the SIG 556 only seen them, never shot them.

BTW a friend of mine works for RobArms her name is Terra, she's also a MOD on the forum. Fun girl. Wish she was single.

I've worked with the XCR, it has a bundle of good features & is an excellent design.
I've only hefted the SIG.
The XCR is much lighter & if I were in the market for a .223 platform other than the AR series I'd go for the XCR.

If it matters to you, CMMG is making a gas piston AR now, just to add to the choices. I have high hopes for it as I am picking mine up next week.
