So my plan is to save up $1500 or so this summer to buy a Sig 226 or 229 and some accessories (holster, ammo, maybe a spare mag) and enroll myself in Sig Academy ($500 or so for the class). Does anyone know anything about their courses? They close to me and convenient, and if I get a Sig, why not go to classes that will specialize in that gun as an added bonus?

My other question is- when I apply for my CCW permit someday, is this going to help me at all, or is this strictly for my own personal gain? What classes would you recommend that would help me get a LTC if this won't?

Thanks!

I'm not familiar with the sig program, but I would guess that it is similar to thunder ranch and other shooting programs that go over basic combat strategies and shooting drills. Will probably do a lot of drilling on things like failure drills, shooting from various positions, carry methods etc.

That is all well and good, and very good practice. I doubt that they spend a whole lot of time on the basics though. So if you're new to guns, or new to handguns, I think you would get a lot more from it if you got some basic instruction and a lot of range time in before hand. There are lots of offerings from the NRA with certified instructors that could be helpful. There are also CCW classes that go over the basics of carrying and shooting, as well as legal aspects. I think it would be a lot easier to get your moneys worth out of the SIG training if you had really drilled on the basics before hand.

I've never been to SIG, but I imagine that the agenda is pretty much the same as most other schools. You might call them and ask what they expect, but every place I've been started out slow so the instructors could see if the students are safe or not. You might be better off not learning bad habits before you get there. Also, each school has certain ways of doing things. They are neither right nor wrong, just the way they teach. As you get more training you can pick and choose what works and what doesn't.

As far as helping you get a permit, it would probably work for a non-resident Florida permit, and possibly others. Check with your state to see what the permit requirements are. www.packing.org has some info as well as links.

Personally I'd like to compliment you on your desire for training. You'll get a lot farther faster with good instruction than you will on your own.

Good luck and stay safe.

There's a gun shop in Lowell I think it's called Instructional Shooting, that offers coursework to get your CCW. I think it's like $165 and takes a whole day saturday from 8 a.m. to about 9 p.m. If you sign up for that, make sure you read the booklet they send. They'll test you on the booklet pretty exhaustively and you won't go over it in class. All day is spent talking about safe practices, handling guns, sight picture, safety, range etiqutte, etc.

You'll also have to memorize the "make safe" procedures for s semi auto and write them out as part of the test.

You get time on their virtual reality deo range, with glocks and such.

Don't know about the Sig Academy but I certainly commend you on your choice of pistols. I've had a P229 in .40 caliber S&W for about 10 years now and it has performed flawlessly. When I say flawlessly, I mean zero misfeeds or jams after thousands of rounds ammo being fired through it. (it's amazingly accurate, as well) Good luck, and enjoy your Sig.
