My apologies in advance if I missed the discussion thread.

Is there opinion / comments about the knives Sig Sauer has, in particular the Pterodactyl?

Do they actually make a knife, or did they simply license their name to a third-party?

I suspect the latter, and doubt that there's any benefit to carrying a knife from famous gun manufacturer. If you like the looks or your knife saying "Sig Sauer" on the side, then go for it.

Don't know who makes it for them. They brand it under 'SigTac'. Made of good stuff - G10 handle, cobalt vandalium blade. Milspec blade coating, Unique shape.

I liked the look of the Pterodactyl. It looks like an Italian company makes it for them.

Thank you all. That answers most of the questions I had, except for the huge price inflation, They are like $113 new from Sig.

was looking for dark knife to counter my stainless Spiderco Endura which is very shiney. Thought I would give the Sigs another look as I shop there (way too) often.

Sig also has their magazines made in Italy.

Did some more digging and the Fox Knife Company has opened a USA operation. Why the exact design of the Sig knife is not listed, their signature manufacturing is.
They have some less than expensive knives but also some very pretty ones, some Damascus types well over $1,000.
They also make the FKU tshirts.

Called my Sig rep - Sig Sauer is out of the knife business. No longer available. If you got one it is now a collector. :(

Know it's been awhile, but just found this. I have their rangemaster and their pterodactyl. The rangemaster is a wonderful knife for the $45 I paid for it from another forum member. N690c blade steel takes an edge easily and stays sharp. The grind (hollow I think) makes it a great slicer, and the blade shape is classic and wonderful. The liner is a little bit too recessed into the handle for my liking, making it slightly hard to disengage, but not bad. The skeletanized aluminum handle is different from most of my knives and unique. Only real problem is that the clip is tip down only and not very strong, it carries deep, but not tight.

My pterodactyl I've had for 4 or so years now, and I love the blade shape and G10 handle, more aggressive than a Tenacious but less than a Recon 1, and have the same gripe about the clip. (Actually, the G10 on the pterodactyl is probably my favorite of all my knives, the perfect mix of aggressive but pocket conscious). Problem I have with the it is that the liner lock SUCKS. I can bang it against my forearm and it'll fail, letting the blade come down. That is not acceptable and I don't carry it because of that. I tried to contact Sig about 3 years ago to buy a second pocket clip and to address the lock issue. They told me that they no longer had the knives made and so could not get me a new pocket clip, and said that because I had the knife for "such a long time" which was around 2 years at that point they couldn't replace or repair it for me. They did send me a free neck knife, but that doesn't make up for not being able to fix the existing problem.

I'm hoping that my pterodactyl is just an isolated issue of failure. I'd say that if you can find either knife for around $50 it's a good buy, but they're not worth what Sig asked for them brand new.
