As I wrote in the thread over in General Knife Discussion, I ran into the deal on the SIG Tac Pterodactyl accidentally. It came in about a week, which is not too bad but I'd hope for better as they charge twice what most online retailers do for shipping.
Starting at the handle, the knife is not particulary ergonomic. Is it God-awful? No. But it just isn't as comfortable as it looks. Perhaps the handle should be scaled up. That's just my impression. It feels alright/pretty good in all grips, but not great in one. Maybe that's the mark of a good general-purpose design. The jimping, for lack of a better word, on the top-rear and bottom-center are nice but I found they cut into my hand a little too well. The pocket clip is reversible for tip down carry and I didn't find it to be very obtrusive. G10 scales are done very well, grippy and attractive though I could live without "SIGTAC" cut into it. The lanyard hole should be bigger so it can fit 550 cord IMHO but that can be easily rectified. I felt that the handle was very wide for the size and should have been rounded better as the it feels almost blocky at times.
The blade sports a rather radical design. The recurve is deep and the belly is in a good spot to be of use. It came shaving sharp, no dissappointments in the edge. I don't know what the coating is but it looks to be good and is actually matte and gives off no glare or reflection. Again, I could live without the "SIGTAC" logo but the smaller marking (SIGARMS Inc. Exeter-NH USA) looked nice. On the other other side it has the place of manufacture, Italy, and steel, N690Co. This is my first knife in this steel and I'm impressed. The thumbsted works well enough, I found it to be too close to the handle when opening at first but I've gotten used to it. It can be opened with a wrist flick as well.
The lockup is something that I'm not sure how I feel about. The liner is not perfectly centered, which I never really expected, but seems to be a little too much to the left. However, it has no blade play in any way at all.
All in all, it is a good knife and a real steal at the price.

Hammer27, glad you got your knife, and thanks for sharing! The pocket clip looks like a decent "low-rider." The handle shape reminds me a little of the Kershaw Junkyard Dog II (probably due to the thumb placement cut-out on top). Do you have one of those to compare the feel to, and if so, how does the handle feel compare?

Good review Hammer. As I said in the other thread, it will be tomorrow before I get a chance to play with mine. Just quessing, but I'd say those liners are around .050" thick. Not as thick as I would like to see, but should be adequate as long as the lockup is solid and the geometry of the liner to tang has been done correctly. As far as locking to the left of center, I find that a good quality simply for the longer wear it should give the lock. Again, as long as the geometry is right, it won't matter. Looking forward to mine tomorrow, and I can already tell I'm going to love that foldover clip!!:D

I've been EDCing this knife for a few weeks now and I really like it. The ergonomics for me are spot-on and the G-10 has just the right amount of grip to it, in my opinon. There's approx. a 30% lockup on mine which I think is more than adequate and like Hammer27 says, there is zero blade play in any direction. For the money it's a nice, solid feeling knife that has well above average workmanship. I am very happy with this purchase and will probably buy another for a backup or a gift.

I'm afraid I don't have Junkyard Dog II but I've handled one and the handle on the JYD II is slimmer than the Pterodactyl. The grip is going to be different (obviously) because of that and I think the JYD II is going to be a little better for a wider range of hand sizes because the handle on it doesn't have so many sharp cuts.
Last night, after I wrote the review, I came to the realization that the handle might have been designed for use with gloves on. If that's the case, the handle is perfect for that. Unfortunately, I won't be throwing gloves on anytime soon as it's pushing 100 degrees here!

Still waiting to put it in my hand, but my son is headed this way with it, so soon.............................

OK, just got my Pterodactyl about 10 minutes ago. First observations tell me I got my money's worth for sure!! Excellent fit/finish, nice action, and good solid lockup. Another observation tells me that the liners are super thin though. They may be closer to .040" than the 050" I stated earlier, but a 060" liner would have been more appropriate. The liner reminds me of the thin liners on the Buck Striders that folks use to complain about, me included, but the test of time has proven those knives to be more than adequate, once the lock up problems were solved. I will say that the lockup is solid with the liner being stiff and locking hard just to the left side of the blade tang. I don't think that you will accidentally unlock it. The blade grinds are high and even on both sides, and the edge is shaving sharp out of the box, but just barely. Should be no problem to sharpen it up to hair popping sharp with my Sharpmaker. Nice foldover clip, but tip down only, although it does place 99.99% of the knife inside the pocket.......just the way I like it! Also, the knife has enough weight to give it a very solid feel in the hand. Seem like I read somewhere that it weighed around 5.2 ounces, but it feels a hair heavier than that. I'll put it on the scale later tonight to get the exact weight. The grip is a tad shaort for my hand, but not uncomfortablely so, and I do like the thumb ramp as that helps to "extend" the grip a little. Btw, blade looks to be about .125" thick, or 1/8". Not too sure about all the curves on the blade but I'm sure I'll be able to put this one to use!! Like I said starting off, I feel that I definately got my money's worth with this knife!!:thumbup::D
