Time after time after time after time I see just this sort of thing happen.
Time after time some people just don't seem to learn from their past experience.
Trolls like attention. I say again: Trolls like attention.
Remember those 3 words.
If you ignore them, they don't come back. They don't post 500 messages with tons of profiles. Instead, they either mature up, or don't come back.
Don, Razor - you both in particular should know better than to feed the trolls. You should have learned this lesson years ago.
All this talk about banning, banning IP's, locking down threads - sorry, this is not GestapoForums.com (despite the fantasies certain people harbor). I like a quiet place, with a laid back atmosphere - it's a big part of the reason why we have more than twice the members of our nearest competitors and 7 times the members of one of the other sites.
I could lock down all of Iced Sapphire's aliases, but past that, there isn't all that much I can do - unilaterally banning AOL would screw many active members of the forums, and a few suspects too.
Locking down all derivatives of "Usual Suspect", "Emerson" "SpecWar", etc is a waste of time.
You can start other sites, and have totalitarion membership restrictions with supreme moderation - you'll just exclude 90% of all the new people who are actually interested in learning about the companies, their products, and the people on both sides.
Those are reactionary responses, and I prefer to be proactive, hences this little speech.
It's pretty simple guys, you make a big deal about the trolls, and they stick around. You ignore them, and in a few days, they disappear. Rarely do they have lasting power past that.
The more time and energy you waste on them, the more you've taken away from other, more productive passtimes.
