Signalling device.

Hey guys, (and Mrs. Shotgunner):D I am wondering who carries what for signal devices? I was looking at flare pens at a local sporting good store. They also had the marine style flare gun. I like the pen idea because the cost is lower and you can get bear bangers for them, unfortunately most places I go I can't carry any type of firearm.

If anyone has any experience with the pen style flare/banger set up I would appreciate your input.

Thanks

A whistle is my #1 must have and I have picked up a lot of them in the past few months. A whistle works at night or during the day and never runs out of ammo or fuel. You don't need any special technique to use it and it weighs nothing. I am starting to put kits together for different purposes and they will all have a whistle in them.

I have a nice whistle on me Keychain. It works for urban situations as well as wilderness (a flare may not be appropriate in the middle of a city)

-i dont have any flare guns or devices -but now that you mention it I do want some. :)

I have a Greatland rescue laser (red beam). It's a great signaling device and can be used either day or night. The green beam is much more, but is much more visible. The unit runs on 1 CR123 battery and could even fit on a keychain. The other red beam unit runs on 2AA batteries. I got mine from BestGlide.com and is about $10.00 cheaper than buying it from the maker. I also carry a signal beacon and have a flare gun but don't carry it very often now that I have the laser. I think it's well worth the money.

I also have a whistle, a signal mirror and a good flashlight that has SOS and strobe settings. If there are issues with caring a flare gun/pen, you may want to check out greatlandlaser dot com - they have rescue laser signals. I don't own one, but learned about them on the equipped to survive website.

I posted before seeing the reply from 333rm... so yeah, what he said. I think I'll need to look into one myself.

I carry a fox 40 whistle, pen flare gun with flares and bear bangers and a compass with a mirror (Silva Ranger), and a flashlight or two (Fenix PD 30).

As well I carry lots of stuff to make a big fire fast.

Funny you should bring this up. I was just looking at different options over the weedend & was wondering what to get. Thanks for the thread.

I carry an O light with sos and strobe signaling capability. A 4"x6" laminated signaling mirror. Need to pick up another whistle (gave my other one to my girlfriend).

I have some flares but need to check them for expiration. I think it is time to rotate them out for new stock.

RAT PACK #103

signal mirror/whistle/FenixL2D-strobe/SOS features:these are all much better than panic yelling :D

Signal mirror, whistle, and tracers for my pistol. Next year, national parks will allow firearms, vastly reducing the limited areas in the wilderness. Fire, mirror, and whistle are a standard, acceptable (and light) trio.

Personally I wear a whistle around my neck anytime I am out in the woods. It weighs almost nothing and I forget its there until I have to use it.

Like more of the others, a whistle is #1 for me.

I have ones for the entire fam for neck carry when we hike. I also have one on my keys for EDC duty and so does mrs. trailwolf.

In addition, I carry a countycomm signal mirror when I hike and my Ra Clicky has a strobe and sos mode (Gimmicky, but hey, you never know) - I also always keep a glo-toob lithium which has sos and strobe in bright green.

I highly recommend you guys pick up a glo-toob lithium (runs on CR123) - its basically a waterproof led flare with 2 constant on modes and 9 blinking modes. The glotoob is excellent for night hikes to keep clipped to the leader's pack so you can always keep track. Its has come in handy many times around camp and the house - the applications are endless. Also, kids friggin love them. I bought two of them for my parents to clip to their dogs collars for when they are out at night - very tough and worked well (these were the smaller "FX" versions). I actually have one for my doxie's harness for when we are upstate.

Thank God have never had to use any of the above for a real emergency - though many many years ago we used to have a ton of fun signaling relatives on the ferry coming into nantucket :D
