signed up for B.O.S.S. 7 day primitive skills

Did they give you a list of what you will be able to bring with you?--KV

Hope you are able to take lots of pics and post them. Their courses seem extremely taxing, but I bet you will learn a lot.

May we assume you know how rigorous BOSS courses can be?

Statement defending BOSS
Again, I worked at BOSS. In order to even get onto a course, you have to see a doctor and get the physical OK. Aside from that, there are significant waivers and the risk could not be more explicitly stated (for the field courses on which this guy died). Go to their website and read about the field courses. They actually discourage people from coming on the course and again, the risk is completely delineated. They have a fantastic safety record and while this death is extremely tragic, no wilderness experience is 100% safe.

The individual in question, David Buschow, 29, died of: "dehydration and electrolyte imbalance due to hiking in hot environmental temperatures with inadequate water and electrolyte replacement." This occurred in the presence of three staff who had water but elected not to give him water.

The school has denied responsibility, saying that Buschow signed a waiver and was aware that water would not be carried on the first three days of the trek.

Best of luck.

yes I've done my research and i'm training to improve my 1.5 mile time, I'm in decent shape, do yoga regularly, and I've started half day hikes,

but note that I'm not doing the field course which has that beginning impact phase and considerably more hiking. I'm in the skills course which spends more time on the skills and less hiking.

I did originally sign up for the field course but then after thinking about why I'm doing this, decided the skills course was a better fit, and honestly the price is much less.

I took the two week field course in 2008. Had a great time.

The skills course is about skills and not strenuous hiking. Carving and whittling will be your primary activities with the knife.
