"Silencing" Japanese shealth

I've had received a pretty large traditionnal japanese knife with a traditionnal all wood shealth.
I'd like to bring it into the wood, but the knife rattles quite a lot in the shealth which is quite annoying, if you want to observe some wild animal.
I've tried to stuff some plastic bags in the shealth, which works reasonably well, but as the knife is carbon steel, I fear condensation which would damage both knife and shealth.
I can't see too much solution, except going for a leather shealth, but I'm asking anyway in case some one would know some trick.

Oil the sheath.when the wood soaks up the oil it'll be quieter and protect your blade.
hope this helps.

Cut a blade blank out of some thin stiff cardboard and slide that into the sheath, to lay next to the blade.

I would think that doing what Coldwood says would work well, but as you state you're taking it into the woods and there's chance of it getting wet.... So the cardboard could get wet, come apart and end it at the bottom of the sheath in a brown wet lump...

Also there may not be enough room for the cardboard along side the blade... I would think that cutting a couple of thin leather blade blanks would work really well, the trick of course is getting them down into the sheath. Plus you would have the option of using different thicknesses of the leather that you choose.

If there is alot of room then I suppose you could cut the leather blanks, lightly glue one to the side of the blade... like with a glue stick... just so it's sticky... or maybe double sided tape... then put glue on the outside of the leather and slide it down into the sheath and press it against the sidewall of the sheath.

Just some ideas... Have no idea if any of them would work.. You may also see how hard it would be to take the sheath apart and line the wood then reassemble.

Why leather? Why not felt? Does it need to go the full length of teh sheath or just near the top? I'd see how much room was available, and then glue felt as appropriate to quiet the blade. $.02

I got one of those flimsy canvas sheaths with my Tramontina machete. I was too lazy to make a proper leather sheath, so I folded over a piece of corrugated cardboard to fit inside the sheath...duct taped the opening and the edges and slid it inside...took some black spray paint, laid some leaves on the canvas, and did a camouflage leaf pattern on the canvas...it's lasted for years.
