I'm not a horror fan, but this movie looks interesting. Never played the game, the monsters look goofy, but the premise is neat. Anybody see it?

I played the game, and it is kind of creepy because it is like you are the star of the movie. The game makers really does a good job with setting the mood in their Silent Hill games.
Haven't seen the movie though. Previews looks cool, but you know how that is. Most games that goes to movies end up being pretty stupid.
I'll wait for more feedback before renting the DVD.

The local newspaper reviewer had an article this morning on the film industry's tendency to release "unreviewed" films of this sort. Seems that critics invariably hate horror and othe genre films, and so submitting them for reviews is counterproductive.
These things usually do well at the box office just from word-of-mouth and internet reviews, and in the odd case where the film is "professionally" reviewed and gets a good rating, the box office reciepts suffer!

Or it could that horror films are not made to the same standards as films of other genres, so submitting them to critics often means bad reviews. Ebert and Roeper often give Thumbs Up ratings to horror films, but only when appropriate.
Dawn of the Dead remake, two Thumbs Up.
The Devil's Rejects, at least one Thumb Up.
The Ring, one Thumb Up.
Land of the Dead, one Thumb Up.

The films I listed above did poorly at the box office compared to similar films that were unreviewed or received poor reviews? I wonder if that's true.

It could also mean that due to post-production delays, a review copy was not available before theatre release. There are sometimes last-minute changes to fims based on test audience viewings.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

i am going to wait for it to come out on dvd,so i can watch it at home. if the movie is anything like the games i would like to home jumping around than out in public.:D the games are pretty intense!:)

I've played Silent Hill 1 and 2, and those are some very disturbing games. It's almost like you get sucked in to that "alternate" silent hill. I can't wait to see this one, even though judging by the trailers, Pyramid Head doesn't make an appearance. That would be something, though.

Well, this might help a little...

I read up on some of the reviews, including the IGN review... It has faults, I think I will wait for a revised version to come out on DVD. As a Silent Hill fan, I can say it is slightly disheartening to read.
I tend to agree with mwerner's comments above. Movie critics are, well, movie critics. They review all the elements of a movie based on what they feel makes a good film. Not a good horror film, mind you, but a good film. The non cinema-elite folks who go to horror movies just want a good scary story.

It's like putting me in front of a plate of food that a gastronome has rated at 5 stars: I would see twigs and shavings artfully arranged around a lump of something with brightly colored sauces. I would prefer the bacon cheeseburger.

I find movies critics very helpful. as a rule of thumb if they love it then i know i'll hate it. case in point-the english patient, they loved it, I would rather have a root canal without pain meds. and don't even get me started on chariots of fire. no chariots, no fire boy was i disappointed. later, ahgar

Well to be honest the only review I really made my decision off of was IGN. I go to IGN for reviews over any game I buy. So I always go to IGN over any movies based off a game. Basically I have a feel of where they are coming from so I can get a better judgement of what I want to see and if it will have what I am looking for. I think it will definately be worth buying however, I'd rather be in a home setting...with a remote control. :)

I understand what your saying though. Overall on any other films that I think look good I rarely check to see what the critics think, that way I don't succumb to the hype. It's just I always get so excited when I see a movie about a game that always tended to creep me out.

Hey everyone...I watched the movie yesterday. It was pretty bad and boring. The special effects were way too noticeable as being computer generated, and the development was very weak. I was so bored that by the last 30 minutes of the film I was feeling frustrated in my seat. My brother actually fell asleep for most of the film. Out of 5 people, we all had our thumbs down. Not to say this would hold true for everyone, but we were sure disappointed. Hope this helps. Save the dough and watch it on DVD. -Damion

We went to see it lastnight. I enjoyed it, my friend loved it (she was addicted to the first game). I think you really need to have played the first two games to fully appreciate the movie.

Not the best movie ever, but probably the best Hollywood horror movie I've seen in a long time. I'm a fan of old school, low budget, atmospheric horror films (Night of the Living Dead, Carnival of Souls, Messiah of Evil, etc.) but it was an enjoyable movie and pretty creepy in some places.

I'm not a fan of horror movies generally & don't know the video game at all but I do (sorta) want to see it. Some of the exterior shots they did for the film were done in my home town & it's always cool to see familar places on the big screen. Yeah, apparently down town Hamilton, Ontario, Canada is the perfect deserted ghost town... :(

Paul & Nicole have both played all of the SH games but they won't play them in the dark alone. Paul says the music makes it creepy, Nicole says it's the nurses, me - I don't play video games and I do'nt like gory movies. I'm more of an implied-horror person. I don't like blood & guts everywhere unless it's a war movie.

We're going to go see it this weekend.

Having played the first two(mostly through number 4 now) I would tend to agree. I have yet to see this movie, but anticipate it very highly. A lot of people complain in reviews about how its not scary, but they fail to understand that the horror of the games comes about as a result of amient unease(as opposed to Resident Evil, which is "jump out at you" scary). From what I can see from reviews, this movie replicates this abject uncomfortableness precisely. Oh, and Pyramid Head is in the movie. He's even in the trailer. For those of you who don't understand how cool this is, you first encounter said monster in the game while it is raping another monster. Talk about unsettling.

i am looking forward to seeing it on dvd. glad to see that pyramid head is in it. i am on the 4th game too. but just barely started.

*Possible Spoilers*

Yeah I saw it... had to be the worst movie I've seen in a long time, heck maybe ever! :thumbdn:

The story absolutely sucks, no good setups. THe writting has be some of the worst. At least halfway through the film the entire audience was laughing at this 'horror' movie.

All this movie has is gross. THats it, blood, torture and nasty. Lots of nasty.....:barf: By the end I was just sitting there shaking my head, it was just so...stupid...

The funniest part were the zombie nurses. When she turned the light off and they all stopped the guy next to me yelled, "SWEET! Solar powered zombies!" Every one in the theatre laughed at the one. Better than the whole movie.

Pyramid Head yeah...dont expect much there. His only cool moment was when he walked through the door with all the 'bugs' all around him.

I do have a question though. WHat was the point of the movie? Seriously, why were they there? What happened to them in the end? Is that just something for the gamer fans to get or yeah...what ever.

Spoiler Warning

You obviously were not paying attention, because these details were actually quite clear, despite the subjective nature of the Silent Hill universe.
1.) To bring closure to the girl's illness in the face of all other failures. Also as a machination of Alessa to break the constraints of the town/world and to wreak further vengeance upon her oppressors. 2.) Either Alessa successfully escaped Silent Hill itself, they are still firmly grounded in the darkness of the town, or she has brought the "world" to the outside. 3.) No. See answers 1 and 2.

My girlfriend actually liked this movie, despite not having seen it. She gets the gist of it.
I will maintain that this is not really a horror movie, but a film manifestation of the Silent Hill universe. It is not scary in the traditional way(just like the game) but many of you seem to be unnerved by it, just like the effect of the games. And I don't think it was really that gory, considering the source material. There were only a few scenes that I distinctly remember being over the top.

There is a story to be told, but I will claim that the film isn't long enough. It tried to throw out lots of details and backstory in several clips, which I can understand was insufficient for a lot of people. I'm not sure I like the sidestory of the husband's plight, but this had to be done to clarify a lot of details. Silent Hill doesn't necessarily explain itself, vs say Resident evil which has mutated creatures and such as a result of scientific meddling. Cramming a lot of background into a movie is difficult, especially in comparison to the games which can take between 10 and 20 hours to complete. Depending on how diligent or curious the player is, the history of the "world" becomes clearer.

This is the most faithful and best excecuted movie film that I have yet seen, and I applaud the director for very closely bringing the game to life in the film. I am also quite relieved that it did not devolve into an action film at all. I would suggest that only more open-minded people consider this film, as it is very unconventional. If you go in expecting an action-packed adventure, gore-fest, or ghost story, you will be disappointed. If you have played and enjoy the games, you will likely enjoy this film.

I think you mean "despite not having played it.

But yes, I thought it was a great horror movie; not all blood and guts, but enough to make me cringe a little :o . Also, the last half of the movie moved along well for me because I wanted to know the backstory, and they did a pretty good job of explaining it. The movie could have been even longer (maybe with more Pyramid Head?) and I would have still been interested. Maybe I enjoyed it because I kept reminding myself that this is a video game plot, so it plays out a little differently than a traditional movie.

All in all, best horror movie I've seen in a LONG time.! :D
