has any one ever used a silicon carbide kiln shelf for bottom of forge ? :thumbdn:  darn hard to cut and although it was given to me ,slightly used ,they cost about $ 80.00 new Marty

Marty, YES YES YES!   That will make an absolutely plu-freeking-perfect kiln bottom. You can get it cut with a wet diamond saw or very carefully and patiently groove it with a cold chisel, and then try to snap it off over a fulcrum, but that's a real chore and usually doesnt work. You have to about slap it with a sledge hammer to snap it. ......My wife is a full time potter and I have done clay a bit myself. I keep telling folks that there is a world of good knowledge and materials for us in the world of clay, especially on refractories and burners, etc. If you want to build a forge. go to the library and look at the kiln bulding books for ideas. :D

my father in law has a kiln you can park a vw in .i have forge put together and tried to burn kiln wash off of shelf .CRACK:( bummer !! I think it going wall to wall must have allowed too much expantion while sides under kaolin stayed cool .wonder if I cover it with refactory then saralite then bubble alumina , if crack will come thru ? refractory has little wires or needles in it . Close so close :(
