For those smiths and curious types in the Silicon Valley!
In Fremont, there is a regional park called Ardenwood Farm. This park is an operating 1900's era farm. One of the many interesting sites on the farm, is the Blacksmith shop.
I happen to be friends with the smith, whose name is Scott Thomas. Scott has dedicated the first weekend of the month to tool & knife making. Unfortunately, this is NOT a "hammer-in," as forge and anvil space is extremely limited - there are usually two or three smiths working at any given time. Also, Scott will probably be conducting business at times. But if you want to come down, and swap stories or techniques, everyone is welcome. I'll be there on sunday (before the game.)
It's a good opportunity to dust off the 21st century, and slow down a bit. The farm has alot of neat sites (like the Patterson House, a restored Victorian mansion) and activities (nature walks, and the like.) I must warn that there is a small fee to enter the park.
It's just north of the Dumbarton Bridge, at the Newark Blvd / Ardenwood exit. There are signs on the freeway.
