I use brasso for my usual khuk furniture but will it work on the silver furniture of my M43 if not what should I use ??

Experts ??

:)

The can o' Brasso says it's useful for lotsa metals, so I don't see why not. I've never used it on the silver metal because it's never tarnished on me. I've been using Flitz myself but I do have a can of Brasso around here somewhere. For some reason Federico doesn't like Brasso and being his #1 fan, I've not used it much since finding this out. :D ;) :p

I've had no problems with Brasso otherwise and will still use it when Fed isn't looking. :)

Brasso is a bit abrasive for silver, Brendan. There are plenty of products that do polishsilver without scratching or taking off too much (like some of the chemical treatments). I wont mention which brands because your not in the States and I don't know what's local to you.

Any place the carries real silverware would know, or a jewlery store. Choose a good one, the cheap store wont sell you the right thing.

Brendan,

On planet Earth there is a multitude of products formulated and marketed for the specific purpose of polishing silver. Most any vendor of household products will offer several as they are commonly used to maintain silver flatware and other culinary implements. Look for "silver polish".:p

jes' a friendly jab...do you have a hang-over or something???

I don't think the "silver" furniture on the M43 handles are silver but some form of ferrous metal. My trusty magnet sticks to it. If so, it's probably not as soft as silver.

For silver look but still magnetic my first guess would be 410/416 stainless(basically same steel, called 410 in sheet form and 416 in barstock/pinstock). I have a bunch here for that very reason(silvery look but easy workability)

I just looked at the HI site for the M-43. The horn handle has brass furniture but the wood handle has a "white" metal. I thought the kamis used steel for the villagers, gods only know what kind.

Brendan, you didn't special order a silver mounted M-43 did you?

That's what I meant - it's the M43 I won (horn handle, white metal fittings) but I've polished all my other khuk's and want it to be nice 'n shiny too !!

You'd think I was drunk if I wanted to polish real silver with brasso !

LOL

:D

;) Oh, it's an UBBB. Is the whole handle metal or just the buttcap and bolster?
If it's steel then Brasso should be fine. Unless ept has a better idea.

If it is strongly attracted to a magnet, it's steel.

Nickle silver, which is a nickle-containg brass will be about like well, brass in hardness. It should have a very, very weak, if detectable at all affinty for a magnet. My guess is that's what the "white metal is.

BTW, there apparently is a lot of stuff out there being marketed as "sterling silver" (92.5% silver) that is stongly attracted to magnets. The majority of such items were reported to be marked .925 and were represented as orginating in Thailand or Italy. (Remember that some clasps have a steel spring in them) Something marked "STR", ".925", or "Sterling Silver" should not be attracted to a magnet. Don't believe that that a "tarnish-proof" coating will cause magnetism.

go to the jewler and get a special precious metal polish... (jewlery polish)

dont use industrial polish on materials like silver and gold... takes off too much metal

Check the posts, but I think Eikervaering has some stuff that works dramatically.

just trying to help, here.:p

Your'e all always a help wether it be real good advice or just the occasional piss take - both I don't mind !!
