Silver, good knife metal?

Hello All, so today I found some antique silver butter knives at a garage sale, and after polishing them with a jewelry rag, I really like the silver of them (I’ve not had any other silver before except maybe a ring) and it’s got me wondering how good is silver as a knife metal choice, and especially if that knife was a bushcraft or survival knife? Thank you

First result googling seems to answer it

Typically, silver is not considered a good material for knife making, especially for heavy-duty purposes. It is too soft to hold an edge for more than a few uses. However, you can use silver for a nice table knife or for a fruit knife that doesn’t require a razor-sharp edge. Silver is also much more expensive than regular steel, so the production cost would be noticeably higher.

just fyi, silver is 2.5 on mohs hardness scale....

basically the same level as gold & aluminum, or your finger nail
... let that sink in

it's literally the worst material for a knife you could imagine, outside of the decorative aspect... if you use it for anything other than butter, you're risking it lol

enjoy

Watching me think: is like watching a flaming passenger train falling into a bottomless canyon, and being shot at be evil space aliens at the same time! 🤣

Silver, sterling or plated or weighted ?
Big difference

While it could be silver, what you most likely bought was steel that had been silver plated.

ETA: Seems like I got beat by a minute.

It's a terrible blade blank material because of it's softness. Unless of course your name is Geralt and you tend to get in scraps with lots of werewolves, vampires, strigas and the like.

No no no
bullets was silver
but
sticks was made of Aspen (Populus tremula L.)

He was referring to Geralt of Rivia, who is a monster hunter in a series of books known as The Witcher Saga. No bullets....

Silver kills the werewolf, a stake though the heart is (supposedly) one way to kill a strigoi (or vampire). As for the striga, or witch, you burn them.......🤣

Aspen is only one type of wood said to be effective. White oak and ash are the preferred wood of choice in much of Eastern Europe for example.
If you can't get bullets, a silver tipped crossbow bolt will do......

Fun fact: In the Witcher novels they actually explain that silver is a terrible choice of metal for a knife blade because of it's hardness. They didn't quite know how to put it into the words of a knife nut but sounds like it was a steel (of some sort) and silver san mai blade. Again, not very practical, but that would be a hell of a cool piece to have around.

Silver is only practical if you are fighting ghosts, as ghosts only take damage from silver arrows and daggers, at least in Cyrodill.

Silvered weapons are used against were-creatures and undead in many game systems...

Ohhhh... Yeahhh, in Cyrodill, we don't have those kind of problems. Lychens, and such? You should consider moving, where are you, Middle-Earth? More like Commie-Earth, I hear you aren't even allowed to legally use magic in self-defense there anymore.
