silver inlay in ivory -- how to do it?

Hello everyone,

I have an old dinner knife I ground into a shape to use for opening folding knives -- often called a "knife nick" among other things. I used a dinner knife with an ivory handle, which has a few cracks in it. I'd like to inlay some silver in these cracks to dress it up a little. Does anyone out these know how this is done? I plan on using either some old,pre 1960 damaged quarters or some old, odd ball forks and spoons as my silver source.

Should I cold forge or melt the silver with a propane torch?

Thank you very much for any help you can give me.

Dixie Gun Works sells a silver ribbon for that type of inlay and their catalog (a wealth of information BTW) has detailed instructions on how to do it. You might want to consider using epoxy with silver dye added. It would look about the same and strengthen the ivory. The process of tapping the silver into the cracks might widen them.
