O.K. guys I'm here to pick the brains of the wise. How do I clean silver plate without taking it off? I've read the net advice about soaking in bicarb and such but these seem like home remedies I was wondering what you guys would use, knifemakers tools knifemakers knowledge.
Thanks in advance.

Dirt or tarnish? For dirt try a soft cloth or soft brush and what ever solvent works and won't harm any adjacent materials. If the tarnish is not too heavy liquids like "Tarn-x" will work OK (again, keep it off handle materials like wood, ivory, etc), but if the tarnish is heavy then you may have to polish to get the surface to shine, and polishing is were things can go very wrong...like polishing through the plate...Flitz and MAAS are good not-too-abrasive polishes

Any good silver polish should work -- they are all mildly abrasive though and eventually will wear through the silver plate. There are several recipes for make-your-own available on the internet. I occasionally shine up my 110s with silver polish when the brass gets tarnished.

Scrum with detergent, water, and a soft brush to remove dirt. Dry.
Use Tarnex to remove tarnish. Clean silver usually looks dull.
Polish with Simichrome polish on a soft cloth. Use a very small amount of this polish. A little goes a very long way.
