Silver-soldering guards

I have been brazing guards on for several years with great results. What I don't like is sometimes there are pits and the grind down takes a lot of time. I decided to try silver-soldering and had no luck at it.
All sufaces were clean and fairly tight fitting. When I put the heat to it, it would not flow. I had to put so much heat on it that the "blue" ran up part of my blade wrecking my heat treat. I was using low temp. solder and flux. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I just want something easier than brazing, but also as strong.

Scott,
At the temp that siver solder flows you will have to put a heat sink on the blade end. A couple heavy steel bars will work . This should stop the heat transfer . Just clamp them on to the blade side//

Take a look!!!

There are also some pastes that you can use to avoid overheating the blade. Just apply a liberal amount on the the blade end close to the joint area, but not so close as to prevent you from working the solder. I purchased such a paste from K&G Finishing Supplies and it seems to do the trick. I've only used it once so far, but will use it in my future soldering jobs.

I too submitted a similar question in regards to soldering guards. Take a look at the posts dated about 22 January.

Give 'em heck!

Thanks for the advice DeWayne, that's a good suggestion too. Has anyone tried J.B. weld or any of the putties on the market for stickin' guards on?
