I have to say I agree with blademan 13. This is the ONLY place I have seen questions (and answers) from people who think like I do...and it's All positive! I know I have liked the Sebenza since I handled one at a small knife show in PA about 5 years ago. Finally got mine about a year ago. I admit I am a perfectionist and after reading Cold Steel's Special Products Catalogs about lock strength, performance, etc. I knew the Sebenza was what I had to have. In fact all those articles about CS lock strength spoiled me for most any factory or other liner-lock knife. I worry about my "irreplaceable fingers". Soooo...my question is Does anyone else have other custom folders they own or are interested in, and why. Not to take away from the discussion of CR knives, but if there are kindred spirits here, I would like to get your input. i.e. why you like a particular folder, do you trust the lock, etc. Obviously, I am not talking about cutting string and sharpening pencils. I know I feel an extra measure of security with one or the other Sebenza tucked in my pocket. I look forward to the discussion. leo g.

IhOCKD, I can immediately recommend that you take up a recently reintroduced opportunity; The Classic Sebenza. I like the handle configuration, and think it is definitely worth your consideration. It appears to have a stonewashed blade of BG-42 steel and knurled titanium thumb lugs, along with the dreaded clip.

My favorite custom right now is an Allen Elishewitz Diablo, featuring his “Bolster Lock”. This is a combination of the liner and Integral locks, with milling done underneath the locking bar itself to allow an inlay of handle materiel. It isn’t really as strong as the Integral lock, as the lock bar is thinned to a 1/16th of an inch for much of its length. But it has the security of the integral lock as there is a full 1/8th of an inch of lock bar to engage the tang, and your grip reinforces the lock the same way as with the Integral Lock. Very clever, and Allen’s fit and finish is excellent. He does a very nice saber grind, and uses a stonewashed finish on this model, with Carbon Fiber scales. Allen is also offering his models with a “Mono-Lock”, what Benchmade dubbed their frame lock.

I have a set of Darrel Ralph’s Apogee’s, a beautiful knife that employs the Integral Bar Lock as well. He uses CPM420V steel on his standard models, but offers a variety of materials, including Talonite. Darrel makes his own Damascus Steel, and I am lucky enough to be receiving a model made with a Three Bar Turkish Damascus blade. It is actually #1 of 5 “Millenium” Apogees, a model Darrel only offered through the Forum Store. So hopefully the sale helped out Mike and Spark a little, and I have a very nice knife on the way shortly.

Hey, thanks for the input. I personally do not like the looks of the newer Elishewitz knives. I tend more toward "plain jane". Glad to hear you like their performance, though. I also like the look of the Apogee. Is that highly decorated, anodized, etc? How much are they? I like the looks of Keith Coleman's folders. I handled the CS II, I believe. A very large folder w/out a clip, but his website says he will add one if you want (www.colemanmade.com). Any thoughts on his knives, any previous experience? I would really like a Bob T. but cannot afford the $500 plus price tag. Also, I really like the Bob Dozier folding Bowie pictured in the latest Tactical Knives magazine. The lock sounds interesting. Any insight on that? "There are no wrong answers". Still looking for input. leo g.

The Apogee is no "Plain Jane" by any stretch, it has a purple to gold anodization across both handle slabs. You should contact Darrel Ralph about pricing and options.

I rather like Mr. Colemans Model II and the Banshee as well. Good prices, too.

I am currently lusting after a Bob Dozier Integral Drop Point Folder, but it will have to wait until after I recieve my latest Speedtech.

stjames: What is the Dozier Integral Drop point? I am somewhat deprived of knife shops or shows here in the North Country. The best I can hope for is the Skylands Cutlery display at the Rochester gun shows. Thanks. leo g.
