I'm looking for something similar to an Al Mar Falcon but perhaps a tad cheaper and with a "better" steel. Roughly what I'm looking for:

- 3" blade.
- One hand open.
- Pocket clip.
- Thin slicer sort of blade.
- Thin overall profile when closed.
- Less than $75.

The Al Mar Falcon is probably what I'm going to end up getting but $100+ for AUS-8. I'm also thinking about a Kershaw Leek but am unfamiliar Sandvik 14C28N or if the Leek is an overall good slicer type knife, any input on that would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance!

Don't underestimate the AUS-8 blades on the Al Mar knives. I have 4 Al Mars, one being a Falcon. I have had no problems with the steel on them. They hold an edge well and are excellent slicers. They have a good job with the tempering and cutting geometry. The fit and finish is top notch, good solid lock up and the lock bar sets perfectly flush in both open and closed position. Once you use the Al Mar for a bit, I don't think you'll regret getting it.

Here's a list of the Al Mars I have:

Ultralight Falcon
Ultralight Hawk
SLB
Osprey, black lip pearl handle

I don't know about a good slicer, but the leek is quite a well made knife. I used mine mostly when I wanted something more discreet or subtle than my big old work knife, so it saw pretty gentle use - I ended up selling it because I kind of moved away from the assisted opening mechanism. The leek is extremely comfortable for such a small, slender knife, and 14c28 steel is one of my favourite steels. I like 14c28 a lot more than the Aus-8, 440A, and 8cr13MoV that you see in similarly priced knives.

Additionally, if you want a more lightweight set up with fancier materials, you could get a G10/S30V leek for far less than an Al Mar.
