I am a huge fan of Case slipjoints, but some of them are a little pricey for a poor man,so I would like to know if there are any knives out there that are similar to Case in quality and materials that may be more affordable?

Check out Buck's made-in-China stockman patterns, the 371 and smaller 373. They make some other patterns there as well. Any Buck model number that begins with 37_ is what you want to look for.

BTW, what is your price range and what pattern/s do you prefer?

The American made Buck 300 series are pretty inexpensive for what you get, and built like tanks. The Chinese made 37X series are even less expensive.

Also check out the Steel Warrior and Rough Rider knives. They're Chinese made, and very inexpensive, but are pretty well regarded 'round here. The biggest issues with cheap Chinese knives are usually fit & finish and the heat treat of the blade steel. But the SW and RR knives reportedly have F&F on par with, or close enough (considering the price) to brands like Case. And unlike so many junk Chinese knives, they actually put a good heat treat on their blades, even if the steel isn't exactly premium (but the again, neither is Case's Tru Sharp).

They can be found in most of the typical traditional patterns, and in a variety of natural (and synthetic) materials. I don't own one yet myself, but I plan on getting a Steel Warrior congress, as the pattern looks to be very close to a Case congress.

Price range is around $50.00.I like Trapper, Saddlehorn Trappers and Muskrat.

Hi Rednek -

You could also look at Bear MGC -

I have a couple of Bears, and they are decent knives.

I received a nice mini-trapper in stag and damascus as a Christmas gift this year, and it is a nicely made little knife.

The two I have compare well with Case in terms of fit and finish - maybe not quite up to that level, but certainly a nice knife made in the USA.

Bucks are a good choice as well, and Kershaw makes a few slip joint knives.

Is you are not concerned about made in USA, I have heard good things about some Rough Rider knives.

best regards -

You can find Cases at, around, or less than $50 in those patterns, provided you're not too picky about premium handle materials.

I believe you can get some Eye, Boker, and Hen and Rooster knives in your price range as well.

If you can afford $50, shop around and get the real thing,if you want a case xx you should buy a case xx.

Check out the Chinese made Kissing Crane slipjoints. The steel is only 440A, but it cuts acceptably. Sharpen as needed. For the price the fit and finish are great.

Hi,

Queen even has some models they offer as Queen City that are under well under your $50 mark.. They feature Delrin scales and 1095 steel. Maybe not quite a polished up as some, but I'm seriously considering getting another Copperhead.

I'd recommend a Rough Rider (rough rider thread people put the QC/FnF above Case), they make a ton of patterns and their jigged bone is getting nicer and nicer with a tight/neat fit and finish.

Under $10 you'll get a very workable knife.

I'm pretty sure you can get a Queen slimline trapper ( D2 with Amber Carved Stag Bone )
for under $50 shipped. For $10 more you can get a muskrat or minitrapper. I would look where COLLECTORs find KNIVES with NETs. Another option might be to search out some USA made Schrades on a popular auction site.

You can find the yellow synthetic trapper with CV blades for less than $40. - Ed

What about Uncle Henry/Old Timer? I dont hear too much about those around here. How do they compare to Buck knives?

Uncle Henry and Old Timer used to be very well thought of before they transferred manufacture out of the country. We have seen a broad range of quality in other manufactures, so who knows. Personally,I have not had one of the new ones, so I can not speak knowledgeably about them. If you decide to try them out, please post a review!

You need to find the old USA made Schrades if you want to compare the quality of Case. The good news is they can be found new or like new on a popular auction site. Last August I picked up a rusty but otherwise like new Old Timer muskrat for about $20.00. It makes an incredible user. You might want to check out the Schrade sub forum for more information.

I've been very happy will all of my recent Boker pocketknife purchases, and each one has been under $50.

The reason you don't hear much about them is because the Imperial-Schrade Corporation went out of business in 2004. They're great knives, and you should have no trouble finding a good selection of pre-2004 originals at the auction websites for under $50, especially if you're looking at the most common and smaller models.

You will need to educate yourself though. Since 2004 an import company has been selling "Old Timer" knives that are, by some reports, not the same quality as the originals. :barf: And not all sellers are upfront with the true origin of their products, if you can believe that.

I hope you stop in and check out the Schrade Collectors sub-forum. :)

Amen! With $50 in hand, don't settle for less than a Case. Get a cv yella trapper and spend the change on beer. That's what I'd do.
