I recently picked up a CS SRK (Carbon V) and I really like the feel of it, but the tang is an issue. Who makes a similar knife to this with a more substantial tang? I'll probably end up getting a Fallkniven, as they seem to be what I'm looking for, but was curious about other options. I know Benchmade makes a similar knife, but I don't like the handle.

cold steel SRK & RECON TANTO in Carbon V are simply indestrutible, but not the better slicer around lol
You can pry, chop, baton or anything with theses without fear.their tang is wide & thick

in this kind of knives Benchmade CSK II would be my choice because i really like 1095 & the price fit the product.

My SRK broke at the tang some 15 years ago when it felt on concrete floor.Don't know what they was made of back then.

Probably it was it.
Honestly, never had anything wrong with any other CS. Except Magnum Kukri Machete, which twisted ,but it was not designed to chop hornbeam,I guess.

I would go with a Swamp Rat RatManDu. I really love mine and it's close in size to a SRK

I think the closest thing you'll find in a current production knife is the Falkniven A1. While it has a stick tang as well it's well regarded as a very tough knife, seems more and more these days proper design and HT mean more than carbon vs stainless. Cold Steel's seeming hit and miss with broken tangs on their carbon V line aside, there's nothing inherently weak about a tang that thickness and width, though stress risers from the way the SRK's tang is cut doesn't help it much. If you want to hunt one down on the exchange, the original Busse Satin Jack is pretty close in overall profile and size as well, and I'll personally guarantee you won't be breaking the tang on one of those. A basic 7 would also do the trick and have a rubber handle, but those are quickly becoming priced out of sensibility compared to what they were new.

The Fallkniven's handle has the same or similar material to the Benchmade CSK II, so not sure that would be what you wanted if you didn't like the handle. If you want a non thermoplastic elastomer handle, you should be looking to the RC6 or RAT 7.

What I don't like about the Benchmade's handle is the shape and the little rudder things. The Fallkniven A1 and SRK have that squared/straight thing going on.

As for the Busse family, I've had several. Just never could get comfortable with them.

I have a few in about the same length that I like. The SRK, a custom RD-6, and a Greco MST. I just really like the feel of the SRK. I'll probably pick up an A1 and an S1 to try out.

may as well get the fallkniven now, you'll get it sooner or later

Man this guy is so right! I have been into knves for quite a while now. I resisted buying a Fallkniven, literally for 5-7 years. I had a CS SRK, Master Hunter, Customs and you know what the F-1 I bought 6 months ago is way better than any knife I had. Then, I decided to buy a custom and pass on the cheaper S-1. I traded that custom and now I have to wait on the S-1.

Yes, they are plain Janes but they are the best knives out there for the money.

Fixed that for you. It won't stop at only 1.

In my humble opinion the ideal Fallkniven would be the S1.

Kind regards,

Jos

-1 on the Benchmade CSK II. I love the fact that it's in 1095, but the coating is rough, the handle isn't as comfortable and feels cheap, and the leather sheath was far from the quality I've come to expect from Benchmade. I love them a lot and carry the 530 as part of my EDC, but the CSK II left a bad taste in my mouth, especially when the original Combat Survival was such an awesome knife.
