Is anybody familar with any quality (Byrd thru D4/E4 quality, with respect to pricing) knives which are similar to the Gerber Paraframe II? I find the blade most useful as a work knife, the steel is just not the greatest. I'm considering going with either an E4 or Cara Cara later in the summer as a replacement, probably with a combo edge (I like plain edge myself, but for a work knife you just can't beat the versatility of CE). This will be a dedicated beat-the-sh.t-out-of-it-everyday kinda knife, something I don't want to cry if I screw it up; but something that will hold its own on any ground. Liner lock or frame lock is highly prefered... which brings me to a question: Are any spyderco's besides the para/millie and raven liner locking?

Like I said #1 runners are the E4 and the Cara Cara.

Liner or frame lock doesn't really speak quality to me. Look at Benchmade axis lock. You won't cut your fingers off because of a faulty locking system.

Hi Buck268,
Just to clarify, you are looking for a knife with
a blade on the order of 3.5"
a blade shape similar to that of the parframe
Decent steel
a liner or frame lock design
priced in the $45 online price realm?

If you could give on the liner lock I would recommend a Cold Steel Large Voyager. It's a lock back. Sort of similar blade shape in either AUS8 or VG1 depending on when it was made. Either one is better steel than the Gerber.
STR said they're pretty well built. I've seen them for $40-$45.

You might also look at some of the CRKT M16's or M21's. They are liner locks and the upper end models are AUS8. Blades are a little funky though to me.

Yeah, I've been very tempted on the M16's, though I have some hesitations. Have seen some problems with the zytel models, but every alum or Ti model I've handled has been great. Just not sure if I realy want a tanto (then again I'm sure at least one of their knives is available in a larger size without the tanto).

As for Cold Steel, well I'd just as soon get a spyderco if I go lockback (or $100+ linerlock).

You clearly do not know anything about frame locks at all!! A frame lock IS one of THE, if not THE strongest lock on the planet! It only gets stronger when you have it open. You don't know what you are talikng about.

I have an M16 11K in aluminum. I bought it on sale at Smoky Mtn, but didn't start using it until recently. I really like it, I've been carrying it at work for the last two weeks. It's compact and it has a spear point blade, the coating they use is pretty durable too. I think I paid about $25.00 for it.
