Similarities with the balisong

I have met a French knifemaker who had invented (or renewed) a locking system which has some similarities with the balisong.
I have this XYZ model in my hands, and I do not manage to flip it like a balisong yet... I'm trying but the blade is so sharp :-)

If you have trouble to see the pix here, go directly to

or

Let me know what you think of this knife. Robert Losson, the knife-maker is eager to know what we can think of his knife.

Looks nice and simple. I would like to own one, just for the fun of it :) Where can I get one?

I agree, were do we find one of those wonderful toys? I too, like the simplicity of the piece, it look very well made as well.

You can email directly Robert Losson by email : robert.losson@wanadoo.fr

If there's a trouble with dealing with English, feel free to come back to me, I'll help. He may take few days to answer because of the New Year holidays, but usually he's often online.

That looks so cool!!

How much are those going for? It looks like a Barry Wood folder concept, with another pivot so one handle breaks the plane...

Also looks dangerous as hell to try to manipulate.
Is there a safe handle? The non-pivot one?

I still want one!!:D

Don't know the price yet, and there are several models:
- 2 different sizes (short/long)
- 2 different pattern on the handle (nothing or labyrinth)
- several colors (blue, red, gray) plus some very nice Damas models

It is not industrialized at all, it's hand-made by Mr Losson.
Last time I went to a "salon" with him, he only had a small dozen of knives to sell.

I have not identified a safe-handle ;-)
What I can tell you is that naturally you take the mobile handle (the colored one) because you can do a pivot. After you have to negotiate a rotation in order to separate the blade from the fixed handle. This is the first technique I have identified.

Guillaume: (Sorry to sound offensive, but I can't think of another example for comparison) Is the mechanism and action the same as those found on the typical folding nail clippers? In terms of handle lift, pivot, and swing? But folds flat.

In either case, I would appreciate it if you could determine if Msr. Losson is willing to sell to the Etats-Unis? Merci.

Tony,

Yes, I see the kind of nail clipper you mention, and indeed, the system is similar. I did not think of it, but now you told me, it's a good mean to explain how it works.

Yes, Mr Losson is ready to sell it to the USA. Well, to anyone who is interested by his knife :-)

Hmmmmmm..., the machining looks emmaculate on those! Thanks for posting the pictures Guillaume.

I assume that damascus is stainless????.....or High Carbon???

Also.., what is the handle material on the "stock" versions...T6-6061?

Thanks!!

what _i_ would like to see, is a video of somebody flipping this knife. :D
if it's flippable, that is...

Ixpfah,

You challenge me!!! ;-)
As I said, it's not as flippable as a bali for now, because some details has not been thought in that way (for instance the locking system). This is the first XYZ model and I have sensibilized Robert Losson to the manipulation thing. He has now a great interest in balisong and is working on other prototypes of XYZ for a better manipulation.

But for you, I quickly shoot videos to show you there are things that can be done with a XYZ, already. Sorry for the video quality, I did it very fast this morning, and I'm not an expert like Clay or Chuck (guys, I've had many difficulties to find a compressor from AVI to MPEG... HELP!!!)

hey, cool!
doesn't look as smooth flipping as a bali, though, but great concept! :D

THANK YOU for all your observation, I appreciate a lot!

not expert on forum yet!
I stay ready to answer to any questions about XYZ,for more informations you can contact :budnealy@ptd.net
He got two knifes for sale
Thank you every body for your understanding

Looks very simple, and nice.

As for similarities with balisong, I remember two kinds. One is S&W "Swing open"er, and the other is "Sedlcany" from Czek. Major difference of the two from XYZ is location of pivot. XYZ has its pivots at the center of the tang. Swing Open, and Sedlcany's handles are connected to blade at blade side.

But, XYZ seems to have much more flipp-ability than the two. They have two handles, one is folded into another when open/close. Namely, you have to change grip while opening not to prevent other handle from being stopped by your own hand.

I've tried flipping my S&W Swinger. Just not possible. The handle and the blade has to line up perfectly to allow the handle sleeve to swing into place. The Barry Woods most resemble the XYZ in my opinion, as stated by Blade420. Except for the added axis to allow the free handle to rotate 180 degrees. And judging from the pictures, you will need that extra axis to allow the free handle to lift enough to clear the stud locking device.

Thanks again!

Iwill appreciate if some of you could show me a picture from the last system from "Sedicany" /CZEK ,it will help me to complete my system's documentation ,for the S&W item ,in fact the Original Patent must be from England designer in 1943/46 see photo i will try to had on my answer, please confirm to me if we are speacking of the same toy ?

Robert Losson

sory I have probleme to include Photo??!!

Although similar, This is not quite the same.
Pivots on the other side.
I'm not sure if this is the patent you are searching for...
