Simonds files question???

I've understood that (almost) all files are W1 steel, but can be hardened in oil, becouse knifes are not that thick.
(please correct me if I'm wrong)

Simmonds are quality. I have used them years ago. W-1 is as good a guess as any.

im trying to make knives out of simmonds files and was wondering who would be a great person to send them to to heat treat?

Some Simmonds files I have are only case-hardened, you can bend them and they take a set, with surface cracks, so I would suspect they are something not suitable for blades. There may be other files from them that are decent steel, you can't really tellwithout grinding off the teeth and having them analysed

If you cut off the end of a file and etch it, there will be a dark line around the perimeter if it is case hardened (Wayne Goddard)...
