What are your thoughts or opinions on this knife? Is it much better than the Talon and how does it compare? Thanks, Bob

The custom one has scales that are more contoured to fit your hand better, a result of more handwork by Rob. The Talon performs like the custom one as its made of the same materials but the differences lie with the handles. Talon has grooved black G-10, Rob's base model has G-10 but he can also use a variety of materials like types of hardwood to bone micarta to carbon fiber. Overall, I really like the Cetan, its one of my favorite customs. Its a great size to carry on the belt.

I've got both and agree with Dexter...the detail of the custom is much better and the grinding is more exact. Finish is also better on the custom talonite blade. The reason that the Talon does not feel as good is the scales are thickened on the Talon because of the grooves in the scales. Which ever one you get you can't go wrong...if you can get 'em. One of my favorite designs in a fixed blade...thanks Rob and Will.

There’s potentially much, *much* more of a difference than simply the handles between a Simonich custom Cetan and the production Camillus Talon. Perhaps most notably, you can have your CUSTOM Cetan made of something other than Talonite: e.g., CPM-3V, BG-42, 420V, D2, or one of the various steels Rob works with. You can request a longer or shorter blade. You can have it heat treated to a particular hardness if you like, and ground from thicker or thinner stock (flat, hollow, etc.). You can have it ground with a straight point, clip point, false edge, more or less belly; request a particular finish; etc. etc. etc.

And on the matter of handles: you can get it in a variety of woods, bone, stag, or synthetic materials (e.g., different colored Micartas or even Titanium, a la Walt Welch’s). You can also have it made, like the blade, slightly shorter or longer, thicker or thinner, as you like it.

In other words, the PRODUCTION Talon may give you a starting point for your CUSTOM Simonich, but you are by no means restricted by it. That’s what makes custom knives so rewarding: i.e., YOU participate in shaping (or even just modifying) its design with the maker, toward the creation of your "ideal" knife.
