Since I started making knives I've struggled with keeping my belts organized. I'm a messy person so naturally I'd always end up with belts strewn out across my shop, new belts mixed in with old belts, grit contamination etc... I probably wasted a measurable amount of time every day just looking for the right belt.

I've got alot of space in my new shop, so I built a simple belt storage rack and I really like how it turned out. One side is for new belts and one side is for used belts. On the used side I keep fresh belts up top and use the bottom for belts that are at the end of their life but can still be used for hand sanding or non knife projects (I've found a worn 36 grit belt to be a great tool for rough shaping handles). This saves me lots of time and frustration and I no longer have to wonder how fresh the belt I'm using is going to be. I think I built the whole thing for around $30 bucks. Please don't mind the train wreck that is my shop. Ive still got alot of work to do setting things up.

That's it, I'm knocking the wall down and taking the other garage too. Whatta space. Good job on the belt rack as well.

I can't even begin to tell you how awesome all the space is. Beats the heck out of a 2 car garage half full of stored furniture.

Only downside is that now Im dying to fill it with expensive machines that I can't afford....better start making more knives.... :o

That reminds me of the wall and same set up I had in my last shop. Now the belts are all hung in an area 1/3 the space. No, it's terrible, but I still figure to have a shop at all. Great plan by the way. Frank

My whole knife shop can fit in a 8 x 10 room. I made this 'belt stand' from a lazy susan I bought at a flea market, added pcv pipe and put four long bolts (actually all rod) at 90 degrees from each other. It allows me to use 4 different grits, right next to the grinder.

I also use pcv pipe for steel storage. Just glue a bunch of different sizes and lengths of and mount it vertically to a base. Saves a lot of space.

That is a great rack you built, but it would take up my whole shop. :) I have a bad case of "spac envy" :) Teddy
