Ok so I have been sharpening my own knives for probable 5 years. I have never had any problems raising a bur on any of my stainless bladed knives Vg10, 420Hc, 14c28n, 13c26, aus8 ats34 etc. I have a rat izula and love it but I am reprofiling and according to the sharpy method I have the edge @30 degrees 15 a side, and yet no bur forms. By the way I am using the sharpmaker but with the stone laid flat on the back so I can get more control. I like a pointy tip. Thanks for the help.

Are you alternating sides with each stroke? I don't have a sharpmaker but I thought that with the method recommended in the directions and that a burr was not raised. Are you using it like a sharpening stones with the rods laid flat and sharpening one side at a time? If so then you just need to be patient and keep working it. If you are working one side at a time a burr will be raised eventually when you get to the edge.

If you are alternating strokes then a burr doesn't have time to be worked up as it is being removed on the next stroke on the other side. Are you getting the knife sharp?

If you like a sharp tip then make sure to use the flats and not pull the tip off the rod. If you pull the tip off the rod it will round it off eventually.
