I just purchased my first paper shredder (cross-cut). Do I need to use a special "shredder oil" or is there something equally as effective yet more generic, i.e. cheaper.

I've never oiled mine. I don't recall the instructions saying to. Use what the instructions say to.

i used wd40 on mine once because i thought it was the compressed air can and nothign went wrong on it..i think it might be better after that...

All manufacturers recommend it. You can either buy lubricant sheets (lubed pieces of paper that you periodiacally feed through the machine) or a container of shredder lubricant. It's supposed to be like mineral oil only thinner.

I had a shredder at my last business and I only oiled it once a year. Just turn it upside down and drip a bit of Three in One Oil (or US equivalent or general light machine oil) into the slots. Run it upside down by making whatever switch makes it go. Turn it over and forget lubrication for 12 months.

If you just purchased it didn't you get an instruction booklet? After wading through page after page of "do not insert appliance in any bodily orifice while plugged in and turned on and standing in a pool of water as that could cause electric shock" you'll eventually come to instructions for oiling. If you don't have the instructions try searching the web; you can usually find instructions online.

I did read the instruction manual (and now I know what bodily parts should never be put into a shredder) and they said to use "Shredder Oil". I was just wondering if there was a generic lightweight oil that would be more versatile than something sold specifically for shredders.
