tonights dinner:

green/yellow split pea & ham stew, with garlic and onions, salt/pepper/paprika. A simple recipe, that i use BOTH in the camp and at home. Best cooked in a cast iron dutch oven, SLOOOOOOOOWLY all day long while your out fishing or hunting.

Emerson Police Utility Knife (PUK) slaying the ham, garlic and onions:

Bushman. Are the split pea's dry? It sound good to me .I may have to try that in a camp Dutch oven.

Thanks for sharing.

Ok. how much ham, peas ,onion and garlic do you use? When you
cook it out side or around the camp fire do you cover it?

about 3 cups peas, 1lb ham, 1 onion diced, 5 cloves garlic, diced. Covered once simmering, STIR FREQUENTLY

also, after about one hour of simmering, add about 3 cups of dry split peas , turn off heat and let the dry peas soak up the broth, for a rich thick stew.

Dang, Bushman! You are going to have to invite me for dinner, because ham and split pea is one of my all time favourites. I can almost smell it!

I put away 3 x 3lb freezer bags full into the deep freeze tonight. About 3 good bowlfulls in each bag.

Thanks Bushman.

O.K. I went back and reread the post.
Got it now
Thanks
Hawkeye

Dang! Why did I open this thread? My mouth's watering!

I could imagine the red lentils would also make it more delicious!

I'm with ya Bushman!

Last evening I did the same thing for dinner. I tossed 1lb of deer tenderloin, 2 potatoes sliced, 1/2 of a large onion, and a handful of baby carrots in a covered casserole dish with a little salt and pepper and 1/4 stick of butter. I let that bake for 2 hours on 350 and WOW! Good stuff!
