I'd been recently pondering how I could make a simple spring spear trap without using all the complicated toggle systems that we see.
Anyway while hiking today an idea came to me and I tried it out. As I hadn't planned on trap making I had to improvise with the cordage using what was in my pocket and some cedar roots.
What I made was quite lame but it proved to me that the idea would work so when I have more time I'll make a better version. For the trip wire I think heavy duty fishing line would be the best as it would appear invisible.

This is the trap all set.....

While we were out we came across a fresh rabbit kill, only it's head had been removed ? Maybe an eagle that got disturbed ?

Neat! When I worked at a American kestrel colony, we used to feed them dead baby chicks. The kestrels would always rip off the heads and fly off with them first and wouldn't return for the bodies until all the head were gone. Go figure! Now, I'm sure chick brains is easier access than rabbit brains, but those birds of prey do really like brains.....Maybe they are zombies :D

That is cool Pit  A trap ready for that Bigfoot that you and Maisy used to hunt!

I watched a bigfoot hunting show on Discovery and saw that thing! They are still out there...

Regarding the trap set up I think you could make the spring part similar to a bundle bow using 3 sticks lashed together and that way you could probably really crank some tension into it !

Cool post Pit. I have been thinking of spear trap options ever since a saw a particular Ray Mears video where some idigenous people used them for killing boar.
