Simple Strider questions...

I am looking at purchasing a heavy duty larger folder of approximately 4" blade length. The Strider knives fit the bill nicely, but I am having trouble figuring out what I like best.

I like simple. The tiger stripes are not for me (sorry to all the stripe lovers out there...). This knife here is the PERFECT look:

EDIT: Well that link isn't too helpful, but the STRIDER knives are in the list to the left of the main page. I suppose those who know the answers to these questions may not need the links anyhow...

I'm am speaking of the PT Drop Point.

Quite honestly, the design is stunning. Then I realized that it is a bit smaller than I liked with a 3" blade. It is like a mini SMF MARSOC (same link). The SMF is all gussied up however.

So the first question is, does the PT come larger or does the SMF come without all the frills?

Secondly, are these prices close to what they really cost or is there a good way to get these blades a bit cheaper?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

There's a model in the middle size-wise called a SnG but it has the stripes also. You could get someone after the fact to redo the finish. James Coogler comes to mind, check out http://www.cncbladewerkz.net . There's probably a lot more people that would do it though too.

As far as price goes the Striders are like CRK knives in that they use dealers and they all sell them for x price or a bit more. The standard prices for the SnG and SMF are $400 and $475 respectively. (The SnG is as small as I'd go so I never priced out the PT) You might find one cheaper in the for sale section here, the Badlands forum, or the Green forum. Or ebay.

hope this helps,

oil

ps. OR... you could get a satin finished custom like:

pss. after reading spykens post, there's an all black SnG tanto for sale in the dealer section if it's still there. It was from MattD

Try looking for a SNG or SMF in the aftermarket. Gen2 (plain beadblast, like the PT) and Gen3 (all black) SNGs come to mind as well, although they used a different pivot (not the current bull pivot) and do not feature the Hinderer lock. They are just as good tho, IMHO.

Thanks for the replies. Very helpful.

The SnG is quite nice and does seem to be just right in size. If I had the stripes, I don't think I would refinish it only because that would be even more money and these are at the top of my price point.

Thanks.

The SnG is not a bad knife. I've been playing around with mine for a while now. You could probably get rid of the stripes without too much difficulty but the Ti part of the handle has a sort of low key "camo" finish that might need a bit more work to remove if you don't like that.
