Moving to "Community Center".

Moving on ...

Let’s see if we can find the right forum …

Err, not to second guess you or anything Cougar, but I'm with blueses on this one ;)

The Community Center moderators don't allow any post that even mentions a knife, and they tend to get enraged about off-topic posts in their forum.

In all the meandering there's some info about sharpening; that's why I put it here. It's difficult to figure out where to put some of these posts....

I feel this type of post would be fine in the traditional folders and fixed blade forum where it was originally posted. It is a kind of story of how things used to be done, much like those posted by Jackknife. I think many members there would enjoy this type of post and there isn't really another forum that's suitable as you have found.

If people complain fine move it...but I doubt many would. We like hearing about the old days and old ways.

Just my 2cents

I think the moderators of Traditional Folders and Fixed Blades are trying to make that forum more about traditional folders and fixed blades and less about off-topic meanderings that happen to mention a traditional folder or fixed blade. Moving off-topic stuff to Community Center would make sense except the moderators of Community Center feel that anything that's even a little bit about knives doesn't belong there. What shall we do? Create a new forum "Meanderings That Are Not Really About Knives But Mention Them"?

How about if people put posts about traditional folders and fixed blades in Traditional Folders and Fixed Blades, and if they want to tell stories go to Community Center but DON'T try to disguise it as a post about knives?

Now the topic of this thread has changed it'll have to move again. Well, I guess it never really was about sharpening....

Let’s see if we can find the right forum …

I see your point of course, and thank you for taking time to answer.

I hope that doesn't mean stories like those posted by Jackknife will no longer be allowed in the traditional forum as I think they enrich it.

I'm sure you and the other mods will find the right balance as always.

Thanks.

Cougar, that's a nice story. It seems to me that this huge problem of where to put it is indicative of a larger problem.

Trying to navigate these forums is like trying to find your way around O'Hare Airport, and the moderation is often as uptight and anal retentive as the Homeland Security Gestapo there. Quite frankly I get a bit weary seeing your moving van so often.

I guess I just fail to understand why the story can't go on the front page of General Discussion where most people are likely to see it. Why should it end up in some obscure corner that I never heard of, never mind actually visit? Because it doesn't fit the overly prescriptive criteria to a T? What is this, the IRS?

Even you guys who are most familiar with the layout here don't know what to do with it. How are newbies supposed to figure anything out? It's a story, for crying out loud. Maybe won't get the Pulitzer Prize but I enjoyed it and I think if most people here had a chance to read it that folks might actually end up a little more kindly toward one another.

That might be expecting too much. Put it on the front page and if it pops someone's aneurysm, well, maybe that would be Darwin at work.

I vote for an "unwanted threads halfway house" where mods move stuff they don't want in their forum , and whatever mod things it belongs in their forum can adopt it. Think of the children!

Putting this kind of thing in General Blade Discussion is probably the best thing to do with most of it, and that's what we're planning to do unless it clearly belongs somewhere else. There was one this morning that seemed to be mainly about guns so I put it in Gadgets & Gear, and this one seemed to be mainly about sharpening insofar as it had anything to do with knives at all so I put it in the sharpening forum. In general, though, you are more likely to get away with some off-topic meandering in General Blade Discussion than in Traditionals.

If you look around the net a little you'll see some forum websites where the moderators really are something like the Gestapo, and when you post something that doesn't fit they don't try to find a better forum to move it to, they delete your post and ban you from the forum.

We try to find a place for almost everything somewhere at Bladeforums....

I agree 1,000 percent.

The "Traditional Folders and Fixed Blades" sub-forum is defined as follows:

Discussion of classic Hunters, Trappers, Lockbacks, Slipjoints, Skinners and other classic designs

The problem is that too many folks are posting topics that are far afield. We do allow some latitude and Jackknife's threads have been "grandfathered" in by mutual agreement between myself, Gus and Jackknife.

That said, too many folks are using the forum as a chat room (which it isn't) and starting redundant threads every time a stray thought comes to mind. Email and PM's are available for contacting individuals for the purpose of chatting.

Another thing. Bladeforums is set up into several sub-forums for the purpose of making it easier for members to find threads that are germane to a certain topic whether that is sharpening, wilderness skills or what have you. Having a thread moved to a more appropriate forum is not a punishment or slap. It's ridiculous that some folks think that any and all of their posts belong in a certain forum because that is where they hang out. We have guidelines and we attempt to adhere to them within moderation.

Don't blame the moderators and administrators of the site because you choose not to look at different sub-forums on the site. That is your personal choice and prerogative. We are a large and diverse community. Managing it to everyone's satisfaction is not an easy task. We do the best that we can in trying to be fair to all, not just some.

Original post deleted. Reason: Way off topic.

Edit to add: sm2: I was in the middle of my post while you were posting your response. I for one totally get the story, and would be dissapointed if it didn't survive this rambling, however I understand your position.

We don't delete threads at Bladeforums. You can go back and edit your own posts if you want to, but don't even ask the moderators to delete other people's posts; they are not your property.

I guess we can put this one to rest.
