Sina Tirsia Wali?

Discretion is the better part of valor...

Haven't met Mr. Alland but have heard alot of talk about him:

Greg Alland is an enthusiastic promoter of Filipino martial arts and has been around the block a few times. He has an impressive skill-level - compared to most practitioners of FMA's. During his long career he has been associated at various times with Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje (Pekiti Tirsia), GM Diony Canete (Doce Pares) and GM Nene Tortal (Dekiti Tirsia). He is no longer on good terms with GT Gaje, nor (I think) with GM Canete, and is currently associated with GM Tortal (who is no longer on good terms with his nephew, GT Gaje).

He maintains an active student base through aggressive marketing and a busy seminar schedule. He's an enthusiastic teacher. I've met a few of his students over the years and they are generally supportive. Some have stayed with him and some have moved on to different things. No shame there - that's typical of a lot of students.

A lot has been written for/against Mr. Alland and that's probably why no one has responded to your post. There are a lot of good Pekiti teachers out there and Mr. Alland is just one of them. My advice is to try him on for size and see if it's a good fit.

Best,

Steve

i'm with slamade...it's a very sensitive subject so that's probably why there's not a lot of people posting. but i do recommend to just find out the answer for yourself if you are able to. just check out what he has to offer and decide for yourself if it's for you or not. Greg Alland has seen FMA inside and out i'm sure. goodluck and maybe you can give a personal feedback for others who are wondering the same question.

Mr. alland isnt the one who is teaching the class.

These guys are.

Im thinking its a mcdojo. Im fairly sure im not going there. Because I got to looking around the web and ran across a page from a forum called bullshido and they were saying that these guys were crap.

So, thanks for the info. It's much appreciated.

Looks like a family-oriented martial arts school. The FMA instruction is probably based on seminars attended with Mr. Alland - although he does sponsor FMA tours in the Philippines. It's hard to say whether it's worth looking into any further.

You might want to look at the "FMA Database" for schools in Missouri.

Best,

Steve

CCCHHHHCCCHHH (me gagging on martial politics),

I've known Greg Alland since 1992 when he taught me his framework of FMA; and he was the first to openly teach me his bladework without asking me to jump through hoops to serve his agenda.
Greg firmly supported me when I founded the IBFG (beginning of AMOK!) and it was through him that I first went to the Philippines.
In every experience I have ever had with Greg Alland, he has shown himself to be a man of generosity, hospitality, sincerity, respect and honor.
Forever repulsed by the stench of keyboard politics, and based on my personal experience, you will find me in Greg's corner.

Evening, Gentlemen.

Interestingly, enough. There is a Cimande school * new to Detroit and it is being run by Guru Besar Jerry Jacobs. On his website, Cimande.net

There is a reference to Greg Alland.

But I haven't looked into the depth of that relationship. Whether it continues to this day, etc.

In this School, " King Tiger International " the Main Curriculum is Cimande Silat.

There is a mixture of Filipino Arts as well and it is in that reference that I am interested.

( when I searching for a school or check out a new school. I take the following stance. )

I personally investigate the credentials for myself and evaluate the situation of it's own merit. If it passes that stage then I make the decision about whether the Art / School / Situation is for Me.

It is Great to Read Tom Sotis and Everyone's thoughts. Mr. Sotis. I too wish that we lived in a world where Virture was it's own Reward. However, Individual Men have to seek out the truth for themselves. They will have to gather information, collate it, organize it and make an evaluation about whether the " present " package is a good deal for himself.

To conclude, we are all vulnerable in areas of life that we are unfamliar / uneducated in. Indeed, what comes around.... Goes around. ( Searching for a School ? ) Be yourself. If you're naturally suspicious. Be So. If you're naturally trusting. Be So. If you have an eye for Details. Great. If you excel in one on one conversations looking the other person square in the eye. Nice. If you have a talent for asking questions. Leading Questions. Great. No matter what your personality is. When searching for a School. Do your research thoroughly.

God Bless the Stalwart Souls of the FMA,

ADF

Very well put! Go train with the man himself and make up your own mind what is, and what is not.

Just to clarify:

I meant no disrespect to Mr. Alland (whom I have never met), and gave essentially the same advice to the initial poster as everyone else: go check him out for yourself.

My description of Mr. Alland's background was merely meant to explain why no one else was willing to post about him: If you've followed the various flame-wars on the FMA forums lately, you'll find undeserved attacks on and by quite a few individuals whose martial arts abilities are quite distinct from their ability to maintain civil relations with each other - and it's often the most deserving individuals that get the least amount of respect. Saying anything in this context is a little like cutting your wrists before going swimming in shark-infested waters.

It's also interesting to note that threads like these usually unfold just before a seminar marketing drive.

Far better to find a teacher that you like, and just train.

Best,

Steve

Hi Slamade,
I thought someone was trying to pick open old scabs - and I thought your post was a fine response in Greg's behalf; if we met IRL I bet we'd be friends.
AMOK! regards,
Tom

I dont care about mr alland, I care about whether or not the guru at this school has the skills to teach me. I dont know much about fma, so I really cant tell whether hes good or not, this is what I was asking. Is that guy any good?

what is considered good or bad? if you don't have FMA background then i guess he would be qualified to teach you. but if you think he can't fight, that doesn't necessarily mean he sucks either. best way is to contact him personally...either way i'm sure he can teach you more than what you know now...and if you feel that you've taken everything that you've learned from him, then move on.

i've personally seen instructors who are not good fighters but are very good teachers and end up with students with such high level fighting skills. if he can impart what he was taught then he's done his job.

Well I dont really think anything about him. Im just worried that if I go to his class, and I get taught a certain way of doing things or a certain technique that has no real world application, well Im just afraid it might hurt more than help. Or if I use this technique I might get killed from doing it, if I was forced to use it.

So anyway, I guess I will go to his class as soon as I am able. And I if I see anything I dont like I will move on. Problem is there arent too many options available around here, when it comes to martial blade craft. So like you say I will learn more than i know now anyway.

Thanks for the info though.

Look around, figure out what your most interested in training, Then go to one of the weekend or longer intensive seminars by that group or instructor. Get a good foundation then start your own training group with some friends, keep hitting the weekend classes, spread it around, go see different people, different styles.

After you have a good understanding you can commit to one style, or just continue your own thing.
