I haven't seen any pics of the BJ LE with no choil so I figure it is safe to assume you guys haven't done them yet. So, since that might be the case I offer this simple plea.

I love my four CABS. They are the best edge I have ever received on any Busse by a landslide. I hope for the same on the BJ LE's. But, every one of my cabs was ground into a recurve. I know many will say that that is natural without the choil but that is not completely true. I own lots of production and custom no choil blades that the edge is true all the way to the choil. Sometimes the edge doesn't get all the way to the ricasso but that is preferable to the recurve variety. Looking at lots of pics of other guys cabs it is evident that some are ground straight and lots have the recurve at the ricasso end. Please, please, please, make this a priority when you guys start grinding. I for one would be very appreciative. If not, I am sure I will enjoy my recurve BJ LE anyway, but any effort towards avoiding the recurve would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for my mild rant.

I have read that thread and understand its intent. There is nothing they can do about this nor am I asking them to. You can't replace metal that has been ground off. I do not want anything other than the possibility that the future no choils are ground with more care. I have seen plenty of pictures and not all of them are recurved. This is merely a attention to detail issue. If this forum is only about rainbows and unicorns then I apologize for my thread and Jerry can delete it. I assume there is a learning curve in grinding a different style and I have complete faith that the masters at Busse will only get better with time.

To answer your question, no I have not contacted the shop and have no intention of doing so. I don't think this thread is insulting or counter productive. Constructive criticism should not be shunned.

I didn't get a BJ LE, but my CABS also came recurve style.

I've been waiting for my Wicked Edge system to arrive so that I can "fix" the blade. Of course, I'll lose a bit of blade height, but that is the only way to remove the recurve.

I'm sure I could send it to Garth and get it trued up without any problem. But I'd rather Garth kept working on new product for Knob Creek (and maybe even Blade).
This will also give me a blade to learn on as I attempt to master the WE system.

I agree with pedropcola in his plea, unless the blade is advertised as a recurve, please don't let it ship if someone sharpened it into a recurve for whatever reason.
Fewer headaches/disappointments/complaints/issues/fixes for all involved.

My CABS has a slight recurve, very slight... I noticed it immediately but didn't think much of it.

Perhaps it is from starting the plunge line near the hilt has an element of more time being spent on the "belt" than that taken towards the belly curve which causes the slight "recurve" ....

From a sharpening perspective if using wide flat stones .... losing the recurve would help a lot ....

I am no knifesmith but the thought is that a choil, however small, allows you to grind straight and even right to the edge. If the edge is the ricasso then it is easy to "cheat" and the slight bowing occurs as the belt gets up to the edge. Very bad explanation, someone smarter can probably do better with the wording. Check the pics of all the cabs, scabs, and lcabs. The ones with a choil all are straight as an arrow. The choilless are usually curved at the ricasso end. All four of mine are that way. It is a simple fix if they are aware that they are doing it. That was and is the whole purpose of my post here. Nothing evil or malicious honest.

Garth sharpened my CABS and it has no recurve. I can see your point, but perhaps requesting him to personally handle your BJLE would help.

I would not mind a micro choil IF it was made into a single large sharpened serration so that it was useful. If the choil were too small for a finger yet the front half was sharp, it would be easier to sharpen the rest of the blade without a recurve, wouldn't catch on anything while cutting and still have that classic Busse look. ;)

Maybe I can convince Jerry to do mine! Seriously, they can all do it right otherwise they wouldn't be working there. I have complete faith that if the crew knows it is a priority then they will make it happen.

I agree, a slight pause so as not to hit the hilt makes sense in regards to the recurves. When there's a choil, there's more room for error.

hey, i haven't seen or received my bj le either, in fact i'm still waiting for my regular bj. anybody know the difference in the finish of the le bj vs a regular bj?

.

Well, a regular BJ is just regular, but a LE BJ really leaves you totally satis... Hey, waitaminute... you're trying to get me infracted, aren't you???! :grumpy:

;)

I had my CABS sharpened by Josh w/ no recurve, and the second by Garth with no recurve.

The recurve does suck to get. Especially if the knife is pulling kitchen duty and not making it all the way down to the cutting board by the ricasso.

Yea, this thread has taken a disturbing turn. On a side note, where are the guys who had the problem with the name SLUTS? How come they don't have a problem with a knife called a BJ? I'm sticking with subliminal messaging as the explanation.

I'm still waiting for the picture of #13 No-Choil BOSS Jack LE.

and I agree with the OP, no choil blades should not have any recurve at all. My CABS is with steelnut so he can bend some Kydex around it for me and other folk, but IIRC it is straight.
