So, I missed the grind-in at Ethan's but I still wanted to do it, so I decided (with some help from J. Terrio, T. Hunt, and J. Nowka) to go ahead and do it myself! So first things first the design I decided on is a "harpoon point" I'm calling it, I don't know if that is the actual name or not, but it's what I'm calling it.
This was the initial design:
After some rework it became this:
then I took it "off-line" and into some cardboard:
I realized one it was a good size but it doesn't cut worth puu-duu! So, next logical step was to order some steel! Ok, next logical step is take one back and look and go "Really dude?! You have ZERO technical skill and you're going to make a knife!!! BY HAND?!" And it was after THAT step that I went onto USAKnifeMakers and looked at the steel they had available and figure out what I wanted. I wanted to try a steel I had no real exposure to and something "fun" I have LOTS of 1095(/CV) and I have A2, D2, yada yada yada... So I decided to get 52100. Also went ahead and got my G10 for my scales (Blue with Orange liners! WHOOT!) Today I got the shipment in:
With a BK-11 (cami) for thickness comparison:
and got to work!
(At this point, it still cuts like puu-duu! But still makes me tingly!)
After that was done I remembered another WIP thread that Todd was helping on and had the depth cuts around the blade to make it easier to cut out, so that is what I did too.
And 45 minutes later, lo and behold
Now papa is going to lay down for a nap so I can't make the noise in the garage which is fine because doing all that by hand with a dolla general hack saw (it was what we had...) really makes your hands TIRED!
