Is a Master Bladesmith certification now part of basic training? Last I checked members of the military were universally good at only one thing; doing the bidding of the federal government without question. I won't speak to how "honorable" that particular mindset is but where does the knifemaking training come in? Most of these guys use knives the same way anybody uses them. To cut stuff that's usually not that hard to cut. Most military issue knives are just like a lot of other military equipment, just barely not crap. I'd think that former tool and die makers, mechanical engineers or machinists would be a better crowd to pick your high end metalworkers from than the guys that are heralded as heroes for doing a job that they'd be thrown in prison for refusing to do.

I would say the majority of us ( formerly doing the bidding as you put it) do not consider ourselves great knifemakers let alone master bladesmiths. There may be a few who have dipped into knifemaking but most have not. While you are correct that tool and die makers, machinists and such would be a better choice for a knife designer, some ex service members may have the skills. And yes, it was and is honorable to defend ALL of our citizens.
