Singing Bowls?

Bill,

I know in the past you've been able to get for us non-khukri, but nepalese nonetheless, items.

I'd really, really like to get a hold of a nice brass singing bowl. The ones I find in the states are either wayyyy to expensive, or cheap things that don't sing.

For those of you wondering what the heck I'm talking about, it's a bowl hammered out of brass, that when struck (usually with a nicely carved wooden dowel of sorts) it makes a very pleasant sound, and the dowel is ran around the lip of the bowl to extend the tone -- kinda like when you make a crystal glass sing with your finger. Anyways, it's used during meditation, and it's really spiffy.

I'd normally ask privately, but this seemed like something others may be interested in too. Bill, is there any way to rope up a few? Any idea how much they would cost?

What does this have to do with Khukris? Everything. I've always wanted to say that

Nice post, Tom. I'll have to check. We can get some of the bowls but I am not sure how sweet the song will be and that's a problem.

But you know the story. Heard melodies are sweet but those unheard are sweeter.

I would probably like one as well if the price is right.

I have also been put off by the high prices here knowing that the profit is dayumed sure not going to the ones who really deserve it!!

Khukuri FAQ

Bill,

glad to hear it might be a possibility. i too have misgivings about buying an overpriced item when I know that someone is working for pennies a day. depressingly hard to avoid though

please keep me informed, and put me down for two.

Bill,
Is it possible that someone over there could test them? It doesn't seem like it would be that hard.

Are these used often/at all in Buddhism?

Bill,

any word on this happening? just wanted to make sure this didn't get lost in the shuffle.

Get the large wide khukuri's such as the 22" Ang Khola or Ganga Ram special. They will sing to you when you play them with the chakma (much like a violin and bow).

I better log off.

Lark in the Morning are really good people to do business with. I personally haven't bought from them, but know people personally who have. Thier products aren't the cheapest as James has stated, but all in all of very good quality.

I was interested in the bagpipes until one of the local Scots let me play his chanter once.
They're sorta like an Indin Flute, but take more air than I have. I will stay with my Coyote Flute for loud and racous music.

Khukuri FAQ

There's another kind of bagpipe that doesn't take any wind to play. It's only the smaller and softer pipes that are mouth-blown; the larger and louder bagpipes are pumped with a smaller bag that you hold in your armpit and keep pumping (no, I'm not kidding).

Nepal must have native bagpipes of its own ... just about every country has their own form of bagpipes ... gotta try something to get this thread back on track....

P.S. (second try) Why should anyone pay perfectly good money for a bagpipe when you could buy a khukuri instead and go out and kill and skin a goat and cut down a tree and whittle it into some pipes ... then you'd have a bagpipe and you'd still have the khukuri!

I can hear the voice of a friend of mine who's a retired opera singer right now ... I hear him pointing out what's wrong with that plan from his viewpoint -- if you got a bagpipe that way you could make a second one, too. I don't think there's any smiley to show what his face looks like when he hears bagpipes ... this one is closest, though.

He'd be happier if you buy a khukuri and don't make a bagpipe with it....
