CMG Ultra-G -
"G" for US Government issue (NSN: 6230-01503-9513)

ULTRAG.jpg

Uses a single AA battery, has a selected white LED (less blue) and advertized HA-3 hard anodized finish.

It is small enough to fit easily in a pants pocket for an EDC - it has an advertized runtinme of 25 hours (tested at 11 hour at full brightness)

I did a comparison between the CMG Ultra-G to the plain "civilian" Ultra on CandlePower Forums

CMG Ultra-G vs. Ultra

I feel the CMG Ultra-G is somewhat analogous to the ArcAAA LE is to the plain ArcAAA

Currently it is very well priced CMG Ultra-G $15 from County Comm
making it the lowest priced of any Ultra that I know of

I have a CMG Infinity and an Infinity Ultra (which rocks!), but $15 is a great deal for an Ultra-G. I can't wait to see the CMG Sonic.

i heard the ha-III wasn't as good as surefire or arcs, but for $15 how can you go wrong. seems like a nice light. it'd be better with some glowpaint in the reflector though.

Yes the Sonic would be a nice addition to the CMG line -

but I would still prefer the Ultra's (especially Ultra-G) over the Sonic just as I deliberately chose any Ultra over the justifiably very popular ArcAAA or LE.

That's due to sheer fact the Ultras use a single AA battery as opposed to the smaller but lower capacity AAA cell - getting much longer runtime for the similar level of brightness - and still remains very pocketable.

People claim the ArcAAA (and probably the Sonics) are much smaller and suitable for the keyring - while not disagreeing with the simple fact that a single AAA flashlight is going to be smaller -
they are still a bit too big for my keyring - where I've had an "almost not there" Photon Mk.1 yellow which still hasn't worn out for the Photon II replacement I had bought over 3 years ago.
(Photon yellows are advertized with 120 hours battery life - and I see well - with good definition and contrast - yet disturbs my eyes' dark adaption very minimally)

I love my Ultra as well, but it might have to take a backseat when the X-1 comes out. :D

Sonic??? What's the Sonic? I'm assuming it's a AAA light. Right? Not sure how this got by me.

When is it going to be available. I have both an Infinity and an Arc AAA. I can't imagine that the Sonic will be the equal of the Arc AAA, but who knows?

Tell me more about the Sonic!

spoken like a true flashaholic.....
anything new, and not yet available is a "must have" ......
he who has it first on the block .... WINS :D :D :D

So.... what would make the pending Inova X-1 "better"?

Size? at 3.7" it's longer than the Ultra's 3.25"

Is it whiter (less blue)?
evidence so far, the Inova Microlight white I have is noticeably bluer than my plain CMG Ultra, which in turn is bluer than the Ultra-G......

The momentary push tail switch? - good option - but separate twist on? I much prefer the push click for constant on as in the Streamlight Scorpions.

So I'm waiting for many more opinions well after the light comes out - with the possibility for Inova to correct any possible early problems/glitches/hiccups.......

But then that's just me -
it's hard to budge my EDC once it's established -
afterall I took all that time to consider/decide on the EDC.....

Looks good for 15 bucks, but I'm still thinking about the other Infiinity that stays in my knife box because it died on me after a week I had it. It started to flicker, then it wouldn't light consistently, and then wouldn't turn on at all. The ARC AAA I have works wonders, is the new CMG better or at least equal?
Thanks,
Matt

This sounds like a bad pcb connection.

I think most people's experience of the Infinity or Ultras are of good reliablity.

I would suggest contacting CMG direct and get the problem resolved.

If you already have an Infinity you can pretty much turn it into an Ultra by scraping off the black dot that serves as the + battery contact.
Once you get down to bare copper (the Ultra's is gold) you'll see a BIG increase in brightness.

CJW,
Well, since I figured I had nothing to lose, I took off the black "dot" and left the copper connector. Still have nothing. No big deal.

If the X1 is anything like my X5 with it's looong run time and toughness, I'm in. Looks cool and has the tail switch (IMO better than the twist head) to boot.

Interestingly, the Lithium I had in my Ultra since Thanksgiving finally crapped out. The Ultra does indeed have a moonlike mode ala ARC AAA. Again it'll be way hard to beat the Ultra in the bang to buck area for AA lights and if the X1 does it, I'll be a haaaapy camper. :D
