I am trying to find a single blade production Lock Back for hunting. Have been everywhere on the net trying to find this "perfect for me" knife. Spend? $50-60, can't do custom. Would prefer to have simulated bone handle or something other than "Buck wood". This is driving me crazy, like the Camillus knives but they don't have the bone handle. Also looked at Case, but, I had to many questions about their quality?

You ever get determined to find something and feel like you are fighting a losing battle? Thats where I am at with this. It seems like there are so many BM/Spyderco type folders out there but few traditional type blades for us slow to change traditional types!

Any suggestions on where to buy at a reasonable price?

Thank you.

He has some very nice looking knives you wont find anywhere else. Some are out of the $50-60 range but under $100. He also has weekly specials. Maybe a Laguiole might be in order. They don't lock but it's about the stiffest backspring I've found. Good luck.

Have you thought about a custom Buck 110? I know it's a bit out of your stated price range, but for $100, you can get a 110 with a brown elk horn handle. A gorgeous knife! Or, for $101 you can get one with a sambar stag handle.

Now, if they'd just offer a custom 112, I'd buy one. :(

tkelly,

Try the Case full size Copperlock. You can get one of the "Working Series" for ~$35 and it has jigged brown delrin handles and a non high-polished blade. It's a 4 1/4 closed lockback with a long-pull clip blade of stainless steel. If you have a Galyans close by, that's where I got mine. Lowe's also sells Case knives so they may have one. It's thin enough to carry when you aren't hunting too.

You can see one here online. Newgraham is great to deal with:

Fit and finish on my two copperlocks was much better than I have experienced with Case multiblade slipjoints. Maybe it's the lockback design. Neither have any lateral play but the blades aren't centered when closed (but they don't rub the liners either).

tpkelly,

If you buy a Case knife you can be assured you'll get decent qualtiy from BVB Ranch Knives on the internet. Email Barry, tell him you're a blade forums member and he'll make sure you get the pick of the litter. After dealing with me he knows the quality we are looking for!

He sent me a real nice Antique Bone Copperlock. It's slim and light so it rides well in my pocket and it came razor sharp!

If you want a tougher knife I'd recommend the Buck 110 or 112...Walmart $30.00. These are sheath carry becasue they are heavy.

The custom 110's are nice but you can buy 3 standard 110's from Walmart and still have money left over for lunch!

Cheers,

That Camillus looks pretty tempting at that price. I think you might get a better blade with the Camillus or Buck, but a Case Cheatah (111 1/2 pattern) might be a consideration.

TKelly,
You brought up a great point on locking folding hunters. There just is not too much variety out there when it comes to a locking hunter.
I would like to see a 72ish or bulldog patterned hunter as a lock-back.

If i remember correctly a few years ago Camillus made some "bullet patterned" and trapper knives with locks (not sure if it was on one or both blades).

You may want to take a look at some of the Remington stuff too. (These might still be made by Camillus. I am not sure.)
Here is one of their game knives. If you are shotgunning, here with a 12/20 ga. choke tool.

Thanks for all the advice/comments. I am still considering this and will post what I end up with. Would like to buy a Camillus but, I don't like the rosewood handle that they include on most. The knife that is clearance priced above, I can't stand the thumb hole. They make a Boyscout version which I like, but, I don't want the scout insignia.

Buck knives are great, but, I really want the Dura Stag handle or antlered version. Maybe I will need to save my nickles for awhile and buy the custom model? I am going to do some more searching and get back to the forum with some of the options.

Thanks again,

tkelly

Puma made some stag lockbacks in three sizes and I think they still do. Now mine are pretty old from the early seventies, but they are the finest factory lockbacks I have handled. Not sure about the new models at all. I have not had the chance to handle one.
